With his army struggling to fend off fierce Russian advances all across the front, President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine urged the United States and Europe to do more to defend his nation, dismissing fears of nuclear escalation and proposing that NATO planes shoot down Russian missiles in Ukrainian airspace....
Mine is nostalgia. That's literally my copium drug and it really is strong some days. It's not that I sit here everyday and never move on to newer things, I do sometimes embrace new things and realize there's more out there than what I have....
Simple, short term pleasures, abandoning of long term plans, and taking comfort in the fact that I have not (and will not) bring children into this world.
I know nothing about the process. How can a decision take months? What else are they doing? Are there counter arguments or something happening in the meantime?
It feels like people are a lot nicer here than on Twitter and Reddit, and even when people disagree, it’s generally civil and not an all-out flame war. Also, there’s no algorithm promoting outrage all the time....
Yeah, that’s possible. You can create a totally private instance (where nobody who’s not a member can even see posts), or just an independent instance that isn’t federated with anyone. I personally don’t know anything else - I’m just paraphrasing someone more knowledgeable.
As for Beehaw, it’s the instance I use most. When they defederated, the mods gave trolls as the biggest reason (they are very transparent about their decision making, which I appreciate). They were simply overwhelmed with mod duties. There weren’t a lot of people running Beehaw (I don’t know if that’s changed in the last few weeks), and they defederated from the instances that most of the moderating workload came from. They said that defederating was a last resort, and hoped they’d be able to re-federate some day. We’ll see.
They are very serious about maintaining a civil atmosphere, but they’re not “word police”. Disagreements are fine as long as you’re not a dick about it. It’s not about what you say, so much as how you say it. If you’re not a rude, nasty person, it feels like any other instance. I’d recommend giving it a try!
I used to be a big proponent of “/s”. My rationale was that reddit was a worldwide site, and it wasn’t fair to exclude people who weren’t fluent in English. Plus, I didn’t want to live up to the stereotype of the selfish, arrogant American.
Now, I just don’t worry about it. Over time, I realized I could say something obvious and seemingly non-controversial, like “the sky is blue”, and people will disagree anyway. If somebody a thousand miles away takes a sarcastic statement literally, and decides that I’m an asshole, then so be it.
Mostly what I feel is gratitude. Personally, I don’t have the skills, technical knowledge, or free time required to run even a small instance. I know I’m relying on the generosity of others, which makes me much more tolerant of delays, glitches, etc.
A couple of years ago I discovered my wife of 25 years was having an affair. I kicked her out and told her to go be with him (maybe that's another AITA question). She asked what I would tell the kids, who at the time were 20 and 17 years old. I said I was going to tell them the truth. She pleaded, "please don't tell the kids." I...
The details of the affair aren’t their business, but the fact that it happened definitely is. She didn’t just betray you; she betrayed the entire family. You made the right choice. They were old enough to understand, and they deserved to know the truth. They deserved to know that their mother could have handled things differently, but was willing to destroy their family. Even divorcing instead of cheating would have been better. She’s just mad because her kids know what a piece of shit she is, and she’s taking it out on you.
Some of Reddit’s most popular communities have posted open letters to the company with a series of requests regarding many key issues at the heart of the recent protests on the platform. They want a response by June 29th.
Reddit has given several responses, full of contempt, belittlement, and insults. Oh, and threats. Can’t forget the threats.
Hey reddit mods: reddit doesn’t give a damn about you, your sub, or the community you built. Yes, it sucks. Yes, it hurts. Don’t be a fool and wait around for another response. The sooner you move on from reddit, the better off you’ll be.
