    @grivettcarnac @casseagull I've mentioned in another thread that Martin Lukacs, in his book "The Trudeau Formula" examined how the carbon tax was simply about having a "we done something" policy to create a social license for further fossil fuel extraction.

    So we have a largely greenwashing policy vs. PP's culture war, with the NDP being rather rudderless. In 2015 the "Leap Manifesto" was released and the NDP could have built on that but didn't.

    I see that the NDP support was not specifically for killing carbon pricing, but for holding meetings about it, but were they not bamboozled a bit by the Conservatives here? Given that it's a tactic designed to turn up the heat on the LPC and tie environmentalism to the concept of unaffordability.

    @carkner The federal NDP could have spent time building on the Leap Manifesto of a decade ago and had an actual climate policy instead of just reacting to events.

    @carkner The consumer carbon tax is just Liberal greenwashing and not an actual climate emergency plan. The Tory anti-carbon tax campaign is just culture war b.s.

    Unfortunately with nobody having a real climate plan Tory leader Piss Pants is getting away with his culture war b.s.

    leftylabourtech,
    @leftylabourtech@mstdn.social avatar

    @carkner The carbon tax was just a "we done something" policy to create social license for increased fossil fuel extraction. Martin Lukacs described this in his book "The Trudeau Formula" a few years ago.

    @carkner The political consultant class that runs the NDP suppressed discussion of the Leap Manifesto and allowed it to gradually fade away.

    The current NDP response is just a reaction to Piss Pants' culture war crusade that somehow the carbon tax is responsible for everything including the common cold. The NDP doesn't have a serious climate policy and the sad thing is that they could have had one.

    leftylabourtech,
    @leftylabourtech@mstdn.social avatar

    @carkner IMHO the CASA was an incredible strategic blunder by the NDP. Very little from the NDP "shopping list" was accomplished over the last three years. Much more would have been accomplished by the NDP maintaining its independence and holding the sword of Damocles over the heads of the Liberals.

    The CASA has allowed Piss Pants to paint the NDP with the same brush as the Liberals in his culture war crusade.

    "Come out, you animals’: how the massacre at al-Shifa Hospital happened

    During the massacre at al-Shifa Hospital, the Israeli army shot patients in their beds and doctors who refused to abandon the sick, separated people into groups with differently-colored bracelets, and executed hundreds of civil government employees.

    Episode 274 – Smoke and mirrors and Pierre Poilievre

    In this episode, Sandy and Nora talk about Pierre Polievre’s strategy of looking like he’s fighting for average people and why even just looking like you care goes a long way to convince people that you do care.

    @CFord Did you listen to the podcast or just read the headline? Honestly, these are two of the best (genuinely) left commentators in Canada. Of course #PPBoy lies through his teeth. The question is "Why do the lies work?" If you want to combat the lies it's important to understand why they work, and Sandy & Nora examine that in this episode of their podcast.

    leftylabourtech,
    @leftylabourtech@mstdn.social avatar

    @CFord US historian Thomas Frank (who grew up in Kansas) has been writing about this stuff for decades. Liberal/social democratic parties (depending on the country) abandoned the working class under neo-liberalism to chase more affluent/educated voters often in either the burbs or the now gentrified urban cores. Into the political vacuum the far right goes to turn (what should be) class war rage into culture war rage that benefits the ruling class.

    leftylabourtech,
    @leftylabourtech@mstdn.social avatar

    @CFord It's not enough to say "PP Boy Bad" or "Trump Bad" or "Sunak bad" or whoever. You actually have to offer a genuine alternative that would improve working class people's material conditions.

    leftylabourtech,
    @leftylabourtech@mstdn.social avatar

    @CFord P.S. always keep a cheap set of $5 speakers handy...or some $5 headphones. :)

    leftylabourtech,
    @leftylabourtech@mstdn.social avatar

    @CFord Or you can try "buy used/refurb". It's much cheaper. Not sure if you're using a computer or a mobile device.

    leftylabourtech,
    @leftylabourtech@mstdn.social avatar

    @CFord I think that it's important to put forward what you actually plan to do differently...and these days it can't be small tepid reforms. The problems we have after 30+ years of neo-liberalism and the climate crisis require big solutions.
