Several journals have been instituting a submission and reviewing break over the summer. It's a nice idea to promote a healthy work-life balance. But PsyArXiv preprint submissions suggest the best time for this is Christmas break, with a 50% drop in preprints.

More nostalgia. A very nice pressing of Karate's 2002 album Some Boots.

Some PhD students have difficulties getting the high quality supervision they deserve. Has your department done anything to pro-actively prevent problems (instead of fixing them afterwards) that you feel made a difference? If so, what did you do?

Thanks for citing my 2022 Sample Size Justification 1000 times. https://online.ucpress.edu/collabra/article/8/1/33267/120491/Sample-Size-Justification

This is a good moment to tell you that you (in general) suck at citing my paper. I made a whole app to help you write a solid justification. Please use it.

Have been buying some new records out of nostalgia. But I also hope this counts as a classic :)

Today at the Paul Meehl graduate school we have Lisa DeBruine teaching on advanced data simulation. And as an after lunch break we have Nick Brown talking about using simulation to detect 'errors' in research.

Our second episode of
@NulliusInVerba about Paul Meehl's lectures is online! https://nulliusinverba.podbean.com/e/meehl-ii/ It continues to be a great joy to reflect on these lectures, 35 years after their recording.

New episode of @NulliusInVerba ! I read Faust and Meehl, who in 1992 made a strong case for an empirical science of science, criticizing the overreliance of history and philosophy of science on case studies, suggesting psychologists engage in metascience. https://nulliusinverba.podbean.com/e/prologus-34-using-scientific-methods-to-resolve-questions-in-the-history-and-philosophy-of-science-faust-meehl/

What are relatively simple things that you wish researchers would report, or would report better, that you have to keep pointing out in reviews?

Our first of 3 episodes on the Meehl Lectures is out! Listen here: https://nulliusinverba.podbean.com/e/episode-33-risicae-theoreticae-et-asterisci-tabulares/ We had a lot of fun discussing the first 2 lectures, which are full of interesting knowledge! @NulliusInVerba

In this new prologue episode of @NulliusInVerba Smriti reads the last part of the autobiography of Paul Meehl. It is a very worthwhile read of one of the best researchers in Psychology reflecting on their contributions to science.

European Journal of Social Psychology now accepts Registered Reports (and a new 'Outlook' perspectives paper), requires open access to materials and data (where possible), requires a sample size justification for each study (citing Lakens, 2022). https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/share/X7EXPB67JZDTKMA72KJN?target=10.1002/ejsp.3068

@NilsArlinghaus Sorry, in English might be better :) we met during the Perspectives on Scientific Error conference. would you be interested in meeting up for a chat about some ideas we are having? We would love your input :)

Daniel Dennett has died. We read his paper 'Chmess' on @NulliusInVerba last year. A lovely short paper on how not to get dragged into useless research or discussions. Give it a listen!

Large Swedish survey shows questionable research practices are common. Strong predictor is biasedness (counter norms), internal competition (!). Also shows group level ethics discussion (but not traditional ethics training) has a negative effect on QRP's https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10805-024-09520-z

I like this recommendation to report confidence intervals not as 3.5 [-2.0, 8.7] but as subscripts ₋₂.₀ 3.5 ₈.₇

Not the biggest thing, jut but seems a tiny bit easier to process.

I did not realize, but my university @TUeindhoven has a publishing deal with @royalsociety Royal Society Open Science so that we can publish there without paying APC: https://royalsociety.org/journals/open-access/read-publish-agreements/ Very cool!

First time I am hearing of the idea of a Research Guarantor - the author who takes responsibility for the integrity of entire project. Seems like a very useful thing to require upon submission, but seems to be underused.

@Graffotti this is about internal quality control. If you associated this with gate keeping you failed to understand it.

@knutson_brain I think it often is, but now it is explicit.
