I did some comparisons against DeepL and some LLMs, and it's not looking good for DeepL... Might switch our translation provider at this rate if DeepL can't keep up. It keeps either missing huge chunks of text or breaks due to formatting in the original source text. Unacceptable.

LLMs seem to really excel at translation. I've tested a handful of weather forecast texts and they outperform DeepL in accuracy, ease of understanding, and formatting every time. Plus they're customisable with prompts... The question is, which model is the best?

Also really struggling with the decision just because of ethics and morals in general. At least DeepL uses neural networks (which aren't trained on stolen/copyrighted content), but damn is it bad in comparison.

Here's a comparison of ChatGPT and DeepL on a randomly picked forecast text example that we received. DeepL is our current provider, and you can see it makes some unacceptable mistakes (highlighted in red).

Came across a neat-looking indie gamedev tool that I wanted to check out, but they dropped Mac support when Apple killed 32-bit apps 🤷‍♂️

The bridges Apple burned with indie game devs with the 32-bit cutoff and notarization still have repercussions today, and will far into the future

@stroughtonsmith There's no valid reason for 32-bit apps to still exist in 2024. CPUs have supported 64-bit architectures since the early 2000s. If an app is still getting updates and continues to only support 32-bit, then that dev is a moron

@FlockOfCats I'm trying to find food places near my hotel but Google Maps doesn't show any, even though if you zoom in there are HEAPS! It seems to prioritise business pins even if they aren't related to the category you're searching for... Apple Maps shows me exactly what I want, and prioritises them correctly over any other map pins - maybe since Apple doesn't take ads/payment for prioritising pins? Google Maps is borderline unusable these days

@FlockOfCats Yeah same, Google Maps is so easily accessible in the browser but you have to use the Mac/iOS apps for Apple Maps, but it’s so ridiculously better at this point, they’re incomparable…
