I run an information security consulting company in the UK and EU. Long ago I studied chemical engineering, still interested in science and engineering (pro-nuclear and pro-renewables) and politics of EU and Eastern Europe. I mostly post in English, occasionally in Polish, which is my native language, sometimes also in Russian and Ukrainian. I've been to Russia and Ukraine a lot over the last ~20 years, actively supporting Ukraine's defense effort since 2014. I almost always follow back. I prefer to discuss any views as long as they are supported by arguments and evidence, I do ban for insults and hate speech. Once 2:486/23 on #Fidonet

Nordic journalists have produced the documentary "Skyggekrigen" which documents Russian spy activities.

It contains the scariest quote, I have heard all year:

"My hypothesis is, that what we are seeing here is the first foray by Russia into understanding how to disrupt western electricity generation […]
It can be used as an economic weapon. I mean what would be the effect of a complete blackout of Copenhagen, or a complete blackout of the London Stock Exchange?"

In an interesting turn of events #Prigozhin has just made a public statement to the effect that “Wagner Group” will be leaving #Bakhmut as of 10 May, regardless of the military outcome. He motivates it by ammunition shortages “caused by envious fat ass generals who saw our successes on the front line”. But nothing in this statement is real.

“Wagner” is not any private army but a semi-official branch of GRU. GRU is a powerful “third power vertical” in #Russia who may fight with the other ones for its business interests, but it’s still part of the armed forces of Russian Federation and 100% loyal to Putin. “Wagner” will not move anywhere without an explicit order from the GRU generals. Other “power verticals” (most notably FSB) previously voiced opinions that “Wagner” should gradually wither away in the deadly siege of Bakhmut as otherwise it may create a political threat for Putin, which is why they insist on continued “meat assaults”. This Prigozhin’s speech can be seen as a response from GRU intended for the ears of FSB and Putin’s administration. As everything in Russian autocracy is about a delicate balance of power, submitting to GRU demands would strengthen it too much. But letting them die off would strengthen FSB too much, therefore this drama will likely met a balanced response, unsatisfactory for all parties.

As Prigozhin explicitly says “only 2 km out of 45 km are now left to be taken in Bakhmut”, this statement also bears a carrot in addition to the stick: his offer to Putin, the great arbiter, is a promise to capture Bakhmut on 9 May, the “great victory” that everyone desperately needs in Russia. Whether that’s feasible at all is another story: Ukrainian armed forces have been very carefully balancing the amount of land they’re giving away, and when too much is taken, they quite successfully counterattack and take back some. Therefore if Russia fails to take Bakhmut by the magical date of 9 May, Prigozhin’s statement will provide an important cover-your-ass argument, allowing him to blame the “official Ministry of Defense” vertical for the failure.

.... and the latest update on the #localelections - definately not looking good for the #Tories;

If #voterID acted to put off their 'natural' voters from popping along to vote, then you won't be surprised that this morning their already talking about widening the range of ID acceptable at polling stations... ha ha, its not like they weren't warned of the chilling effect on turnout

So the polls only closed less than half-an-hour ago and already a partial Govt, U-Turn on #voterID looks on the cards as there are widespread concerns that it has severely depressed the turnout...

I mean its not like the idiots weren't warned!

Voter suppression needs to be a little less obvious to work.

Perhaps happy the #Tories are really amateurs on some aspects of their #authoritarianism

The Q. is now how wider will the range of acceptable ID be made before the next #election?

kravietz,
@kravietz@agora.echelon.pl avatar

@ChrisMayLA6

How about making it narrower not wider — a single national identity document to replace a dozen of completely different, semi-private and private documents that only create a mess, because Oyster 60+ is accepted but regular Oyster is not? Basing elections identity verification on a bus card (!) and a dozen of other proprietary documents sounds like a completely absurd solution to a completely self-inflicted problem in this case...

Nobody in the EU is “obliged to carry id”.

That is unless you’re going to a rental agency or bank, in which case you obviously do carry your national id card, and that’s it.

In the same situation in the UK you are obliged to carry two of a dozen accepted quasi-ids plus a heap of bank statements, utility bills and other documents to really prove you are you.

I’m not sure which of these represents a larger violation of “civil liberties”…

@vfrmedia

There were numerous massive data leaks from Experian and other private data aggregators, because they operate on for-profit basis and privacy (they call it “non-functional requirement”) is the easiest one to save on (=increase profit).

Right now they aggregate enormous amounts of highly sensitive data, which we are obliged to handle to them specifically because there’s no single national id in the UK.

Whoever would implement the database, they would operate under government mandate and rules, which are much more strict about data protection.

What I personally see even larger threat (as someone working in infosec) is that this sensitive data is passed to a network of rather obscure companies (rental, recruitment, financial, property etc) who are physically unable to properly handle and dispose of it, even if they wanted.

Which is why when someone speaks of opposition to national id in order to “protect privacy” I open my eyes wide, as it’s having exactly opposite effect :)

Faktyczny wzrost gospodarczy w 2022:

Rosja -2.1% USA +2.1% Strefa Euro +3.5%

Prognozowany wzrost gospodarczy w 2023:

Rosja +0.7% USA +1.6% Strefa Euro +0.8%

So, in the last election there were only 6 cases of electoral ( has reluctantly admitted). This from a population of over 45M

You'll be aware of the number of cases of fraud by MPs (from a population of 355) exceeds this in nominal terms & is vastly larger in proportional terms.

So, let be clear, is about voter suppression not fraud.

If the were interested in fraud they'd put their own house in order.
