We've hit the newest low #sharkey users tell #sharkey users to use #sharkey :lolsob:

kopper,

@Amelia hey have you heard of this really cool software it's called Sharkey they took mastodon and made it really neat I think you should migrate your instance

if my antennas are any indication sharkey is German misskey and iceshrimp is french misskey

kopper,

@Amelia oh no I know but in terms of user base it seems to be oddly popular with the french (again, for the posts that federate to me)

kopper,

@julia @freeplay it's from latest misskey (by latest I mean like the last month's release)

Sharkey doesn't touch mfm yet to my.knowledge

kopper,

@julia @freeplay Sharkey tries to keep in sync with misskey upstream so I doubt they'll do any significant changes like completely switching out the parser.

I think they forked mfm.js to fix the WordPress domain mentions but not sure if that's even on the dev branch yet

well thank fuck I'm not an hashtag mastodon admin huh

web dev hot take: you are only allowed to shit on client side web apps when server side logic becomes free. 0 dollars 00 cents per any (reasonable) number of requests (that can still withstand a "hug of death"). no strings attached. no credit cards or surprise bills or startup times.

if this is impossible, client side web apps are here to stay. unless you're willing to personally pay for the hosting of each and every app you think should've been server side forever.

we can both be opinionated pricks

  • kopper,

@caiocgo no, mainly because I haven't bothered setting up translation yet. the instance software I use supports deepl but I'd need to register and get an API key and whatnot

another thing that worries me is that I believe the free tier does send translated post data back to the ai dataset and idk how much I want to do that to others posts

I believe there are some patches floating around in the Japanese side of Misskey dev that add support for Google translate, but that may be the worse option regarding privacy

no idea if anyone has wired up bergamot/Firefox translations yet but that's quite a bit limited in the languages it supports so unsure if that would be helpful

(of course English isn't my native language but I don't think that's the point of your poll)

    freeplay, to random

Having the timeline be its own scroller is a little weird to me, it also messes with Firefox's back & forward touchpad gesture for some reason :neofox_googly_shocked:

    kopper,

@freeplay the hash is based on the file path, so unless things get moved around it should be relatively stable

i've considered getting rid of it when unhashing the css but with the code quailty of misskey i have no idea if any conflicts would happen

(that and there's some light trimming going on to make the class names a bit more bearable, which could introduce it's own conflicts)

federating with lemmy was a mistake

daily reminder to test your shit with instance software other than mastodon

    Marie, to random

Wouldn't it be amazing if ActivityPub actually had support for changing your handle/username especially for trans people who use their name as a handle.

    kopper,

@Marie i feel like i'm going to be corrected by someone who knows better but AFAIK the protocol does not care and you should be able to Update your preferredUsername at any time

it's just that mastodon fucked up and baked usernames into it's object ids (misskey does not do this!) so it cannot change usernames without breaking federation, and because mastodon cannot do it nobody else has probably built their server assuming this is possible in the first place

    kopper,

If I go to other mastodon servers like mstdn.ca my profile shows basically nothing except some replies despite claiming I have 182 posts. Adding up threads, comments, microblog posts, and replies for my account gives 185 before posting this, so not far off in number.

this is an activitypub thing in general and not specific to kbin. if nobody is following you from that instance your posts won't get sent to that instance (as there's no real point!)

the posts of yours that do get sent there are likely there because you commented on a group that someone had been following.

ps: hey @ernest, attempting to view a comment on it's remote instance (https://kbin.social/m/kbinDevlog/t/642285/-/comment/3689397 for example) redirects me to the login page, whereas doing so on the first post on the thread itself works fine.

is this a known issue? it's a bit inconvenient when following kbin content outside kbin (want to make sure i'm not missing any replies and writing the same thing someone already did, which happens fairly often on single user instances such as mine)

    kopper, to fediverse

i am now parsing AND rendering jsonld without taking any shortcuts (proper compacting and framing!) using the exact same underlying pydantic model. ruff and mypy are passing as much as they can when pyld has zero type hints

i will still be storing things "natively" and only handling jsonld when dealing with activitypub because i have better things to do with my life (i wonder how well this is gonna pan out in the long term :clueless:)

there's a lot of to_id utility function calling i wish i could abstract away but that would probably require diving into completely unreadable pydantic extension jank and hacking around mypy and i am so DONE with this
