Visiting Ballarat today. V/Line cancelled our preferred return train, so we're killing some time at the Provincial Hotel across the way. Lovely place to wait for a train. #Ballarat

Can highly recommend dropping into the Goods Shed / Itinerant Spirits just over the road on the other side of the Station for a G&T if you have the time....

Yesterday I posted a review of books 3 - 7 in the "Dublin Trilogy" (Adrian McKinty, I'm looking at you...)

https://www.austcrimefiction.org/review/dublin-trilogy-books-3-7-caimh-mcdonnell

Anyway, I listened to these, they were funny, bit on the silly side and really enjoyable.

The reference is really all about Irish authors & their concept of a trilogy :) McKinty's Sean Duffy series was billed as a trilogy, until book 4 came out. Then we didn't know what to call it anymore, and however you look at it, The Dublin Trilogy with 7 books and 2 novellas... it made me laugh a lot :) There is a 7th book in the Duffy series on the way here now - The Detective Up Late (which just to add to the confusion appears to be also known as Cold Water).

@jancampbellcady @bookstodon

And I'm guessing you've read the Bloomsbury / Dead Trilogy (which did turn out to be 3 books!) :)

kcfromaustcrime,
@kcfromaustcrime@mastodon.online avatar

@jancampbellcady @bookstodon lol I hope that's not the case, the living too long bit. I'm surrounded by books hoping to live another 60 years or so (statistically impossible) :)

Just posted a review of The Last Devil to Die, the 4th book in the Thursday Murder Club series by Richard Osman:

https://www.austcrimefiction.org/review/last-devil-die-richard-osman

This is such a joy of a light(ish) crime fiction series that I've had the great pleasure of listening to.

My review of the second Cal Nyx book by Kim Hunt, The Quarry was just posted at:

https://www.austcrimefiction.org/review/quarry-kim-hunt

A well balanced combination of extremely good characters, a very solid and intriguing plot, great atmosphere and some well placed social commentary into the bargain, THE QUARRY tackles quite a bit and achieves all of it with considerable flair.

Interesting - do you have a feeling for why they have dropped out of favour?

I know I've been finding my reread of the Maigret series patchy going - some of them are brilliant / some of them decidedly dodgy when read with current sensibilities, but overall the good is still outweighing the bad ... just :)

Couple of bookclub gatherings ago, we read Devotion by Hannah Kent. Amazing experience.

Everything in this story is leading somewhere amazing. It's emotional, beautiful, touching, surprising and so incredibly moving. Sniffed, snuffled and out and out cried my way through the last part of this book.
