Some properly futuristic hardware in the new iPad Pro + Magic Keyboard + Pencil Pro. Basically the perfect adaptive laptop. Looks amazing. Too bad about the software.

jonikorpi,
@jonikorpi@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@armstrong Letting it run sandboxed macOS apps would be something, and doesn’t feel impossible at least. Swiss army knives like VS Code alone would unlock soooo much utility.

I get this popup every time I visit Threads or Instagram now. I guess their AI thinks I don’t seem monetizable enough to be human. Extra annoyed they screwed up the padding on it and keep forcing me to look at it.

Tinkered a bit with the CSS on my blog (mainly switching to a more mainstream font to increase readability across different browsers and platforms).

Let me know if there's anything else worth fixing.

@floooh Neat! One small snag: long code snippets overflow the page horizontally in narrow viewports. overflow-wrap: break-word; would probably solve it.

In my quest to reevaluate games I bounced off before, I’ve now moved on to Elite Dangerous, which I last played in 2019. As a bonus I now have a Thrustmaster Airbus edition flight stick (a friend found a job lot in charity shop and kindly gave me one) which improves the experience. I had to re-learn a lot and keep remapping the controls as I went so I didn’t get that far, but I didn’t hate it? I got bored really quickly last time but I’m kinda enjoying the chill space ship management. We’ll see

jonikorpi,
@jonikorpi@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@sinbad Docking – and watching other people fail at it – in that game is the most fun I’ve had in a space sim!

Very positively surprised after switching from Apple’s Music apps to Plexamp. Feels like it’s made by the same people who use it, so there's a lot of love in it. https://www.plex.tv/plexamp/

Favourite bits: performance, sweet crossfades, “track radio”, and loudness leveling/preamp/whatever makes everything sound just right.

@jonikorpi@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

Sadly there’s no real replacement for iTunes Match/iCloud Music Library, unless I leave the computer hosting the Plex library running 24/7. There’s no built in way to make it wake up on demand via Plex.

jonikorpi,
@jonikorpi@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

A comforting thing about Plex itself is that it doesn’t touch the files you add to it, just notes down where they are and keeps metadata in its own database. Unlike with Music.app there’s no chance it’ll randomly perma-delete them or replace them with shittier versions.

jonikorpi,
@jonikorpi@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@stephband Hah, respect!

jonikorpi,
@jonikorpi@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@vga256 Oh! Plexamp just knows to send the magic wake-up packet to port 7 then? Gotta give that a go if so!

jonikorpi,
@jonikorpi@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@vga256 Ah, damn. Well this is good info either way, so thanks :)

My fiancée and I want to make a new game on top of a core mechanic from a 2011 mobile game. It’s no longer on sale or playable anywhere, and the company that developed it doesn’t seem to exist anymore. We can’t even find any other games that use the mechanic.

What’s the correct etiquette here? Find one of the devs and ask for permission, or just do it?

jonikorpi,
@jonikorpi@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

The game in question is Async Corp https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Async_Corp.

jonikorpi,
@jonikorpi@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@armstrong Definitely gonna credit the original game, visibly!

If the Threads → Mastodon integration was already bidirectional, I’d use it here to ask @notionhq why there’s no way to remove the fixed-positioned AI bar that’s now uselessly taking up screen real estate in their iOS app.

jonikorpi,
@jonikorpi@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@ben We can see (some of) them, they can’t see us. (Unless they changed something recently and I missed it.)

Accidentally clicked “Remove downloads” on a playlist in the macOS Music app. The playlist only contained lossless files I’ve added myself, not downloaded from iTunes Store or iTunes Match. Guess what happened?

It deleted my lossless files. And started replacing them with lossy versions from iTunes Match. Undo doesn’t work: it skipped the undo history. The files are not in Trash Bin.

Thank fuck I have backups.

jonikorpi,
@jonikorpi@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

It deleted the files from so many folders and messed up all the library database entries so badly that I had to do a full macOS user backup restore. Only way to be sure I don’t miss some of the files and notice years later. Fun times.

jonikorpi,
@jonikorpi@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

Ended up having to do a full system restore, and still getting hit by sync conflicts. Whole afternoon wasted because of one thoughtlessly implemented context menu entry.

Gonna just dump the whole Apple Music ecosystem and move to Plex. It still doesn’t quite offer the same features, but I’m done with this shit.

I was motivated to give Fallout 76 a chance after the TV series but after a couple of evenings I think I’m done. It feels like Disney made a Fallout theme park where people are weirdly nice (scavengers just giving you stimpacks?) and everything has already been done before but the actors are trying to make you feel like you’re the protagonist, it’s just weird. And also incredibly bland for the usual MMO reasons

jonikorpi,
@jonikorpi@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@sinbad Same here, basically. The last time I felt I could impact the world was in Dark Age of Camelot and EVE Online. Most of that was PVP-based though, which brought its own problems. I’ve been hoping for someone to pull the same off with PVE, but seems like no one is interested. Nearly all MMOs (not counting the <=100 player server “MMOs” here) since then have just been WoW again. 🤷

jonikorpi,
@jonikorpi@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@eniko @sinbad I wish MMOs didn’t have the risk of hard-to-predict server bills bankrupting you. More indie MMOs would be lovely. :| I’ve been idly thinking about federated servers, but maybe dealing with the resulting chaos would be just as expensive.

I've updated my cookie policy with Belgian chocolate chips, browned butter, espresso, cardamom, ginger, cinnamon and Maldon salt flakes.

jonikorpi,
@jonikorpi@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@hmans How do you find enough content on there? I’m already following half as many there as I am here, but it’s still super dead in comparison. Tried following some feeds too, but they’re most just full of stuff I don’t care about. :|

jonikorpi,
@jonikorpi@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@hmans Makes sense. Oh well. I’m mostly just hoping the protocols will eventually become compatible.

jonikorpi,
@jonikorpi@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@hmans Meh, it’s just a couple of really loud people with Opinions. Shouldn’t let them stop things. Gonna be people like that on every network.
