folk: some friends and I are aiming to try European cuisines we haven’t had before. What are some good places serving European food types less common in Melbourne? (so not Italian/greek/french)

If you use Spotify, never click on the pop up recommendations or items on the front page with sponsored small print. Artists are paying for those, resulting in them seeing less of their already too small royalties. Go search for the track if you see something in a popup that sounds interesting. https://www.theverge.com/2023/9/13/23872199/spotify-showcase-sponsored-recommendations-home-feed-artists

Dear marketers in the northern hemisphere: if you have an international customer base referencing the upcoming summer is a sure way to annoy your southern hemisphere customers dreading heading into winter

@SituationCake @Thornburywitch There's occasional pieces of new brilliance (Aussie musical Fangirls is phenomenal) but yeah, so many repeat runs of the same things at high ticket prices no less

There should be international regulations about how many countries a band has to be performing in before they’re allowed to call it a world tour. US, Canada and the UK shouldn’t count as a world tour

@engagedpractx with instructions that pretentious I’d be bringing the most annoying fidgets I had

Weird science. You wonder why some future society would be keen to develop science to bring deceased 80somethings back from death. What's in it for them?

@timrichards yeah like in the very unlikely event it became possible they might bring back a few to prove they can but it hardly seems worth their effort to bring back all the frozen bodies

book lovers: I spotted two very exciting looking things this weekend:
Readings is having a warehouse sale at their north Melbourne warehouse on Saturday https://www.readings.com.au/news/famous-readings-warehouse-sale

The Art Book Fair Stallholder Fair is happening at NGV Friday through to Sunday https://artbookfair.melbourne/events/stallholder-fair/

I wonder how much of the current anti-social silliness around AI tools is that our culture has so glorified working in tech as the ultimate job that people are inventing pointless and unhelpful things to have an excuse to stay in the field rather than moving on to something more useful?

I was wondering about the longest domestic trip you could do by air in Australia. Glancing online, it looks like flying from the Cocos Islands in the Indian Ocean to Norfolk Island in the Pacific (via Perth and Sydney) would take about 12 hours flying time, not factoring in the transit time at airports. That would be one long trek!

joannaholman,
@joannaholman@aus.social avatar

@timrichards that is probably the best you could do on commercial flights but on charter Australian Antarctic territory is technically an option

Today I learned the Australian government designates a selection of phone numbers that look real but will never be actually active for use in TVs or movies. Could be useful if you ever need a fake number to sign up for something but don't want a stranger getting spammed https://www.acma.gov.au/phone-numbers-use-tv-shows-films-and-creative-works
