Again, "Trump is worse!" Then blocked๐Ÿคท๐Ÿฟโ€โ™‚๏ธ

https://mastodon.stevesworld.co/@steter/112402055418029413

Gotta respect the doubling down! Replying to me posting some dude saying "Trump is worse!" then blocking me, with saying "Trump is worse!" then blocking me too! The commitment to the bit is impressive!

Listen, you can get as mad as you want. You can call Black folk criticizing Biden "Bitching" if you want. We're still going to do it.

The CDC under Biden dropped the Covid isolation period from "5 days" to "vibes days." Not Trump.

jakelazaroff,

@mekkaokereke vote like a black womanโ€ฆ unless sheโ€™s not voting for your candidate! listen to your jewish friendsโ€ฆ unless they tell you they donโ€™t want your war! oh, and if biden loses and trumpโ€™s boot comes down on their necks? theyโ€™re just getting what they deserved for not supporting biden more! FAFO!

the transactional nature of a lot of liberal allyship is really gross.

yes, thereโ€™s a website obesity crisis, but nothing chews through a limited data cap quite likeโ€ฆ the iOS home screen (124mb???) and spotify (656mb even tho its cellular data is disabled???)

personal hotspot has also been off the whole time so iโ€™m not sure where that 34gb is coming from

i end up turning my cellular service off most of the time so the OS and native apps donโ€™t eat up my data on the sneak. say what you will about websites, but they mostly donโ€™t use the network unless i ask them to!

cellular settings screen showing that โ€œpersonal hotspotโ€ has used 33.8gb and spotify (toggle turned off) has used 656mb

jakelazaroff,

@sarajw TL;DR apps that treat their local state as a source of truth, rather than as a cached copy of data stored on a server. the overarching idea is that you should own your work, and you should never get cut off from it because youโ€™re not connected to the internet/the company that runs the service goes out of business/etc.

Somewhere, someone is looking at recent Biden poll numbers, and convincing themselves that pushing a few boxes of MREs out of the back of a plane will fix this.

It will not fix this.

No I'm not interested in having a "discussion" about this. I know how the conversation ends: someone yelling "Trump is worse!" at me while being convinced that the only possible solution is for voters to accept what is going on.

jakelazaroff,

@mekkaokereke itโ€™s โ€œbidenโ€™s numbers are fine! no concessions to the fringes of the party! we donโ€™t need you!โ€ right up until he loses. then โ€œitโ€™s your fault for not voting biden! every vote counts!โ€

nothing like booking travel to remind you how much of the web is terrible. embassies, airlines, hotels, travel blogs โ€” so much of it is user-hostile, hard to use or just plain broken.

this isn't even just about javascript (although using native form elements would go a long way). there have been four separate websites โ€” four! including google flights! โ€” on which i've found a fare, gone to book it, and either the price was incorrect or the fare just didnโ€™t exist.

the bar is on the floor, y'all.

any errors thrown in attributeChangedCallback get swallowed. They're not propgated to whoever called el.setAttribute('observed', 'data').

jakelazaroff,

@zachleat @tbroyer @develwithoutacause iโ€™m also unconvinced but thereโ€™s an argument that this is perhaps less ideal for developers but better for users, in the same spirit as browsers ignoring invalid CSS property values and doing a best effort rendering of invalid HTML

Happy #BlackHistoryMonth !

I'm still not up to Black History! I'm still working through white US history. Bear with me! Almost there!

Q: Why does it seem like everything has to be woke now? Even our scientists?! It never used to be that way! Why does it seem like these days, even higher education has to think about race, when it didn't before?

A: Higher education, including STEM, did think about race before. That history has just been hidden from you. Because racism.

jakelazaroff,

@mekkaokereke conspicuously unasked: how many people of color and/or women might have gone on to be albert einsteinโ€™s intellectual equals had they been hired?

This instance handles, on average, 6.5 reports of antisemitism a day.

Why is that significant? It's significant because Babka already suspends individual accounts, and Limits entire instances.

Despite this, we deal with ~6.5 new antisemitic accounts per day.

And yet, if we look at the graphs from Fediverse Observer, the number of active users on the Fediverse has gone down!

So what exactly does that mean, if the number of antisemitic accounts continues to grow and the number of active users continues to shrink?

It means that the number of antisemites on the Fediverse is quite large, and what we're seeing isn't new antisemites as much as it is antisemitism being so normalized that people feel comfortable spouting hate, and that despite blocking or silencing thousands of accounts, hate continues to be emboldened.

Graph showing the number of active users on the Fediverse shrinking

jakelazaroff,

@serge what exactly constitutes anti-semitism here? i see from your timeline that you believe โ€œfrom the river to the seaโ€ is a call for violence against jews, even though A) many palestinian activists have repeatedly affirmed that it is not, and B) many diaspora jews have no connection to that land. i appreciate that your interpretation is also common, but iโ€™m very curious whether anti-zionist jews (๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿป) are included in your anti-semitic accounts statistic.

@mekkaokereke

jakelazaroff,

@serge got it โ€” palestinian activists are like KKK members, israeli interests are jewish interests and anti-zionists are self-hating jews. this is really disappointing, man, but i guess i got my answer.

this deserves a longer thread, butโ€ฆ the main reason iโ€™m not more excited about the pendulum swing away from single-page apps is that client/server is fundamentally the wrong architecture for a lot of websites, and itโ€™s dominant mostly because renting our own data back to us is a lucrative business model

polotek, to random
@polotek@social.polotek.net avatar

Somehow found myself arguing with someone who talks about "the fediverse" like it is a) a singular thing and b) a separate thing from bluesky. It helped remind me of a fundamental truth about talking to people who are mad on the internet. What they're mad about is entirely uncorrelated with how well they understand the issues. Anger is an emotion. So is fear.

jakelazaroff,

@adriano @polotek @anildash @janl your server can defederate from the bridge

i've been working on a web component i'm excited about: JSONElement, which helps you declaratively configure JS libraries and other web components directly from your HTML markup. https://github.com/jakelazaroff/jsonelement

โ€ฆdoes that make sense? is it clear why you'd want to use it? does the github repo clarify? would love feedback; this thing has drastically improved the code i've written in some projects but iโ€™m not sure how best to communicate it.

jakelazaroff,

@andrew_chou thank you! i pulled that example directly from the project i've been working on

jakelazaroff, to random

iโ€™m sympathetic to the idea that websites should work without javascript if possible, but i wish we wouldn't hand-wave away the problem as โ€œsuper fragile JS that fails". what exactly are we worried about and how often do we think it happens?

like, are we talking about JS files failing to download? browser extension interference? plain old bugs in the code? architecting a website can be a thorny problem with a lot of tradeoffs, and just telling people to avoid javascript doesn't help solve them.

what are your favourite git config options to set? Right now I only really have git config push.autosetupremote true and git config init.defaultBranch main set in my ~/.gitconfig, curious about what other people set

(diff algorithm patience? a custom diff/merge tool? enable rerere?)

jakelazaroff,

excludesFile = ~/.gitignore

and then in that .gitignore i add .DS_Store or whatever other files i never want to commit to any repo

Would you like to discover some new dev & dev-adjacent blogs?

Do have a look: https://rs.sjoy.lol

I'm adding relevant blogs randomly as I come across them. I shuffle the order every few hours.

If I add so many blogs that the build time ratchets up too far for my liking, I may start the blog shuffle before the RSS fetching, and limit how many blogs are shown... I don't know.

I want it to be a discovery tool, not a "keep up with your RSS feeds" tool, that's what RSS readers are for :)

I don't want Chromium to win. Now its monopoly is removed, Apple can now actually invest in Safari so it's no longer "the new IE6". Since regulators started looking, Apple has really put work into it. Let's hope this continues. WebKit runs on Mac, Linux, Android and Windows (there used to be Safari/ Win). If anyone has money, marketing clout and brand loyalty to make a brilliant cross-platform Safari to compete against Chrome. If anyone can, it's Apple.

jakelazaroff,

"Apple is giving app developers in the EU access to NFC and allowing for alternative browser engines, so WebKit will not be required for third-party browser apps."

Fantastic news! Really hope this results in alternative browser engines being allowed worldwide in the future https://www.macrumors.com/2024/01/25/ios-17-4-alternative-app-marketplaces-eu/

jakelazaroff,

@simon iโ€™m mixed on this one โ€” i really worry this will further entrench the blink monoculture and i think thatโ€™d be more harmful to the web long term than a webkit monopoly on iOS
