So to be honest: The thing that's been scaring me about Threads is less that they'll eat the Fediverse and more that by existing they'll schism the space around Mastodon so hard that pervasive defederation will make the whole non-Threads fediverse unusable, and Blue Sky winds up winning the hearts & minds war. Like I was worried Eugen might take a actively pro-Threads stance and the few remaining servers that haven't defederated mastodon.social yet would finally do so.

gmr_leon,
@gmr_leon@mstdn.social avatar

@developit A number of smaller Mastodon communities have defederated from Mastodon.social, for a variety of reasons, yeah.

I made another account on Mstdn.social due to this, as a number of folks I followed, such as Mcc were there.

Three minor feature frustrations with Mastodon that never get better:

  • Lack of a choice between chronological and "relevance" when searching. I search my own posts a lot & now I have a year and a half of history it's REAL hard to find stuff if I can't search chronologically.

  • When replies to a post are shown, you can't "collapse" or sort down sub-replies. If a post explodes such that subthreads spawn the replies become unreadable. It would be nice to be able to say "hide non-direct replies".

Are there any games/digital art focused Lemmy/Kbin/Postmill sites around yet? I'd be interested in checking them out if so!

Helldivers 2 looks like a husk of its former self, which is disappointing. Some friends & I played a bunch of the first game and really enjoyed it for its art style, satire, & gameplay.

Helldivers 2 may still have good gameplay & satire, but that satire isn't gonna hit as well with the new art style imo, which screams, "Take this seriously, this is real war!" The first via its art style as much as writing told you this was all pretty silly. Second? Eeh.

I feel in this era of painfully uncool corporate net spaces it is easy to overlook the best thing about the internet is when it is allowed to be fearlessly uncool in a human, organic way https://cohost.org/lutz/post/1907611-if-you-re-not-on-tum

Instead of checking out Meta's #Threads, you should check out the chill #IndieGame Thousand Threads by Seamount.

It's a fun game about delivering letters between folks and learning about them as you read said letters, and sometimes get roped into beating people up or trying to fend off the odd wildlife. Or you can play in peaceful mode & just do the delivery part while taking in the scenery.

more games after Halo should have taken inspiration from its bright colors and big open levels that aren't open world imo

maybe there were but I dunno how you translate the above into search terms

Tbh I wish there was a good word for "games" that aren't games in the traditional sense.

I know there's been some inclination to expand the meaning of the word to include non-traditional games, but I think there's still a deep-seated association with games and fun and enjoyment that you can't really shake.

Game just doesn't feel right for titles like What Remains of Edith Finch or, hell, even Soma, at least imo.

gmr_leon,
@gmr_leon@mstdn.social avatar

I also don't really agree with the VR side of the industry trying to coin the term "experience" for their different sort of, uh, "games." It sounds more in line with a theme park ride or something, which sometimes fits for their works, but...Eh.

Part of the reason I bother to think of this tbh is that I want a better way to find these sorts of "games", but there's really no great tag or category they have or fit under to filter by.

gmr_leon,
@gmr_leon@mstdn.social avatar

Experimental or alternative or indie games are all such expansive categories or tags that you're looking through about as much as regular categories & tags.

Experimental maybe a bit less so, but then you're possibly looking more at prototypes or the like than finished works.

One of the underrated aspects of going to other parts of the net like Mastodon or the like is that it can push other languages in your face more, gradually encouraging you to try to learn them.

Or maybe that's just me because I choose not to adjust settings that would keep me in a monolingual space.

Question? Am I in the wrong here? I'm not 100% sure I know how things works here? https://mastodon.gamedev.place/@Nifflas/110645514733968059

I'm so confused. I should probably not have made the original reply.

gmr_leon,
@gmr_leon@mstdn.social avatar

@Nifflas you're good, person you were replying to has seemingly been through some bad experiences here & is guarded from that, hence their replies not really addressing your questions

Some folks of the fediverse tend to be very insular and try to push away many newcomers to preserve what they feel is their ideal space. Tbh I don't entirely understand why they wouldn't gut/disable the ActivityPub parts & use the software that way with that mentality, but 🤷‍♀️

Its kind of wild to me that none of the major social media platforms has tried f2p models like cool tweet skins or whatever.

gmr_leon,
@gmr_leon@mstdn.social avatar

@unormal I think Snapchat is probably the closest to this with their avatars, which I think you can buy clothing for and the clothing is even associated with actual brand names.

Maybe they sell filters as well? I so actively ignore or try to ignore monetization, I'm not sure.

Nintendo responded to the news that they sent a Cease and Desist to Valve because the Dolphin Emulator (used to play gamecube and wii games on PC) was to be released on steam soon.

What are some videogames you'd suggest to someone kinda tired of regular gamey tropes and patterns? And that aren't the magnificent Outer Wilds and its expansion?

gmr_leon,
@gmr_leon@mstdn.social avatar

@TheChancePants yeah, sorry! I wish I could have Outer Wilds suggested to me, it's so good!

...Also unfortunately/fortunately I've already played What Remains of Edith Finch as well, another solid game! Appreciate the suggestion nonetheless!

gmr_leon,
@gmr_leon@mstdn.social avatar

@mezz Leveling, RNG loot & its associated inventory management, currency grinds, throwaway quests/missions (do x times, basically no story nor distinct event/activity to them).

Those sorts of things, which may sound like I'm ragging only on RPGs, but it's increasingly applicable to many other games trying to have RPG-lite elements.

gmr_leon, to gaming
@gmr_leon@mstdn.social avatar

I tend to autoparse quest/mission objective lists on game HUDs as basically chore lists anymore and the whole game starts to feel drained of its charm

I know it's a basic quality of life feature and some games even let you disable their display, but it doesn't change the underlying design that's been exposed. It's like when you start running numbers & optimizing your gameplay, while for some that's the real fun...For me it's more often a comedian explaining their joke.

#Gaming #VideoGames

gmr_leon,
@gmr_leon@mstdn.social avatar

Speaking of, this comedian explaining their joke analogy is also why I don't find as much fun in replaying story-driven games with branching paths right away. There's a similar effect at play, particularly if you have a decent memory or logged your decisions, where a replay can quickly reveal how inconsequential your decisions were.

How many forked paths converge on the same destination, rendering the fork pointless. E.g. Until Dawn did this literally & figuratively way too much.

Been monitoring the increase in adoption of Lemmy, and it's very clearly showing that the software needed more time for development before mass adoption.

I was pretty sure of this beforehand given my light research into it, but it's basically confirmed with the growing pains at hand.

Particularly, the admin/mod tools are in dire need of development from any interested contributors.
#Lemmy

gmr_leon,
@gmr_leon@mstdn.social avatar

One wild example to me of an absent feature is the ability to report a created community. Seeing as open community creation permits any kind of community being made, its abuse potential is obvious.

Unfortunately the only alternative (so far as I'm aware) is to lock down community creation to admins atm, which isn't ideal.

gmr_leon,
@gmr_leon@mstdn.social avatar

I'd be very curious to dig into and see if there are similar shortcomings to be found in Postmill or Tildes.

I suspect there may simply be different sorts of shortcomings given their different development focuses/aims.
