I guess maybe your brain doesn't need this thing as much as mine does.

Good for you.

@hotdogsladies if Shogun gets a remake, then "I, Claudius" needs a full cinematic universe.

I would not be mad if "Dead Letter Office" is your favorite R.E.M. record.

Apparently Black Sails is on #Netflix now from Starz. I highly recommend it as a complex drama with lots of politics and backstabbing all with pirates! Really great acting and lots of fun twists.

@virtualbri the big question for me with any modern series is "did it reach a satisfying story arc conclusion, or was it cancelled mid plot" - how does it measure up on that scale?

@cmconseils@mastodon.social avatar

"You get more conservative when you get older" only really worked for the generations that got RICHER as they got older.
The real truth was always just "You get more selfish the more money you have".

gavgraham,
@gavgraham@mastodon.social avatar

@cmconseils That may be partially true, but I find the concept of the Overton Paradox absolutely fascinating (and enlightening). I hope it holds true at least for another few generations!

Great to see the Stunties getting respect at the Oscars ceremony. Now give them an Oscar! (Also great to see some seamless VFX contributions in the best stunts montage ;) including shots from some friends and a certain wife!)

Thank you. 😀

@virtualbri @cstross welcome to the club! I was introduced a decade ago via another VFX-er, and never looked back.

    malducin, to movies
    @malducin@mastodon.social avatar

    So the time has come to slow down my older movies and letterboxd challenge watches and start catching up on awards season movies. Only seen 10 of the 53 nominated movies. Not sure of the BAFTAs, haven't found a good list to check

    Why do I have to be so tired when I get home during the week

    gavgraham,
    @gavgraham@mastodon.social avatar

    @malducin I have not seen 16 of the 53, it's been a long slog but nearly there!!! A great year for films.

    gavgraham,
    @gavgraham@mastodon.social avatar

    @malducin my wife's a BAFTA member so we had access to the full streaming platform, something like 236 films in total! At this stage now just working through the ones we haven't got round to yet with the highest number of noms/with the most buzz, it's been a wonderful journey!

    gavgraham,
    @gavgraham@mastodon.social avatar

    @malducin Can't tell if this Letterboxd list is completely accurate, but if you ignore the shorts I'm at 24/38 ! https://boxd.it/sbOZy

    gavgraham,
    @gavgraham@mastodon.social avatar

    @malducin I think that the 200+ is everything that entered (except shorts, which must only go to those opted in specifically to those categories, we only saw them once final nominations locked in). They have a good system where everyone is arbitrarily given a 'recommended' list of about 20 films, to make sure all films have at least had a similar amount of minimum views. From talking to friends in the US Academy, they get even more to watch! It's a great perk / fun part time job :)

    gavgraham,
    @gavgraham@mastodon.social avatar

    @malducin there's nearly always some unreleased movies which are included in the longlist "just in case" they end up bake-off worthy. I hope they all deserve their place on this list.
    Some great shows on this list though, congrats to everyone involved.

    gavgraham,
    @gavgraham@mastodon.social avatar

    @malducin my wife's in BAFTA, I would guess they have similar embargo dates on screeners, so maybe they just have to give some of those ones benefit of the doubt?? Wonka, Rebel Moon, Poor Things, Boys In The Boat, and Aquaman not available yet..
    (Nyad is awesome, with great work.. crossing my fingers for that, but The Creator is what I'd put money on if I was betting)

    1l of (4°C) water weighs 1kg.
    1kg (of anything) is 1000g.
    1g of water is 1cm³.
    Stack 1000 1cm³ blocks to get a 10m high column.
    This column exerts a pressure of 1 bar at its base.*
    To heat it by 1°C, you would need 1kcal.
    And 1N would accelerate it by 1m/s every second.

    I had to google how many inches are in 7 feet.
    And I think that's stupid.
