wondering about waldo (n., telemanipulator) i find to my mild surprise

https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/waldo

from the Robert A. Heinlein story Waldo, published in Astounding in 1940, derived from the name of the eponymous protagonist, Waldo F. Jones, who invented remote manipulators to overcome his own myasthenia gravis

reading about 50 years of sql

https://www.theregister.com/2024/05/31/fifty_years_of_sql/

and the earth shifts beneath me as i realise in a few months there will be historical retrospectives of foundational technologies that are younger than me

(i am quite looking forward to the articles about vlsi tbh)

@revk i think it should be reported to trading standards for being misleading https://www.legislation.gov.uk/eur/2011/1169/article/7

nice pictures

but wat? cut-and-cover was “innovative” in 1901? i think not! the very first underground railway used cut-and-cover in 1861, which is still pretty obvious when using it to travel between paddington / euston / st pancras / kings cross / farringdon

vague memory of someone else’s debugging story from i can’t remember where … :

they are called to an office which is complaining that the wifi stops working for two hours twice a day

this office is in portsmouth so it’s fairly obvious that the timing is related to the tides

but what on earth? how can the wifi be sensitive to the tides?!

fanf,
@fanf@mendeddrum.org avatar

our hero is standing in the office staring out of the window in frustration, looking out over the city towards the harbour … in the distance, a naval radar is just peeking over the roofline

when the tide is high, it lifts the ship enough for the radar to get line of sight to the office, so it can interfere with the wifi!

(tell me if you know where this story came from!)

@skington reminds me of one of the less official staff home internet connections at Demon in the 1990s, though i think the thin ethernet coax they slung out the window was at least weatherproof!

@CliftonR ages ago i visited The Bunker, ex-RAF Ash radar station in Kent. it had been decommissioned some years previously, but it was still clear that the trees around the hill had suspiciously flat tops, as if they used to get cooked if they grew too tall 😬
