wondering about waldo (n., telemanipulator) i find to my mild surprise

https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/waldo

from the Robert A. Heinlein story Waldo, published in Astounding in 1940, derived from the name of the eponymous protagonist, Waldo F. Jones, who invented remote manipulators to overcome his own myasthenia gravis

reading about 50 years of sql

https://www.theregister.com/2024/05/31/fifty_years_of_sql/

and the earth shifts beneath me as i realise in a few months there will be historical retrospectives of foundational technologies that are younger than me

(i am quite looking forward to the articles about vlsi tbh)

vague memory of someone else’s debugging story from i can’t remember where … :

they are called to an office which is complaining that the wifi stops working for two hours twice a day

this office is in portsmouth so it’s fairly obvious that the timing is related to the tides

but what on earth? how can the wifi be sensitive to the tides?!

The best way to think of SLS is as a balding guy with a mullet: there are fireworks down below that are meant to distract you from a sad situation up top.

For eight minutes SLS roars into the sky on a pillar of fire. And then, like a cork popping out of a bottle, the tiny ICPS emerges and drifts vaguely moonwards on a wisp of flame.

[It is] a first in space flight, [a] rocket that is at the same time more powerful and less capable than the Saturn V.

damnit apple

i'm experimenting with getting my ssh passphrase out of the macOS keychain using Rust

i did some hacking around with the security_framework crate https://docs.rs/security-framework/ so i can get a debug printout of the query and to add a feature

so the query matches the one used by apple's hacked ssh to get the passphrase

GUESS WHAT

Error: Error { code: -34018, message: "A required entitlement isn't present." }
