Great, lengthy discussion about the limitations of iPadOS and the existential crisis it creates for iPad Pro from about 47 mins in

@stroughtonsmith @joesteel @jsnell You can pry my iPad Pro (even in its current “existential crisis”) from my cold dead hands.

    ellenich,
    @ellenich@techhub.social avatar

@joesteel @stroughtonsmith @jsnell no, but feeling a lot of the rhetoric lately is that if they don't solve the iPad Pro’s “crisis” that the product line might as well not exist or that it's pointless because the M4 is “wasted”… that the hardware is so underserved by iPadOS that it might as well not exist?

Final Cut Pro, Logic and Xcode were the ‘pro apps’ of the Mac era, but the pro apps of the iPad are tools like Procreate. Though iPad has moved towards the Mac over time, it's unlikely to replace it. Traditionally, Apple hasn’t really provided a whole lot of dedicated APIs a high-end illustration app could take advantage of; perhaps that is one of the axes of progression Apple could double down on, and maybe a new first-party AI-enhanced, layered, pro drawing app would make sense for dogfooding?

@stroughtonsmith @viticci I’d be curious how they would handle file synchronization between the 2 OSes? Maybe just rely on iCloud Drive sync to move between them?

Or is it possible for Finder/Files to see a single shared file system between the virtualized OS and iPadOS?

GM dumped CarPlay. This Bloomberg piece digs into the why and the what of it all.

Lots of great bits here, including what the "Ultifi" (GM's CarPlay replacement) experience is like.

    Spoiler: It's not pretty.

The CarPlay vs Android Auto vs Android Automotive saga is incredibly important to Apple, and GM is on the front lines.

    Good read...

@davemark I don’t disagree with GM (or Mercedes) on some of this stuff actually.

Imagine giving up 50% of the user experience of your product to a third-party. Yes, 90% of info-tainment systems in cars are terrible, but the idea of giving up control to a 3rd party doesn’t seem like a great move either.

There’s a reason why Apple wants to own the whole widget, because that way they are in control of the entire experience. The “experience” of different car brands are suuuper important to owners, car software is a way to differentiate.

Flat out not supporting the most basic implementation of CarPlay is dumb though (at least Mercedes got that part right).

From @markgurman on the Humane AI pin:

"Relying on voice control and a laser-projection system is going to be a nonstarter for most people. They just aren’t going to want to interact with technology in this way. "

Nailed it. This feels like someone convinced themselves that projecting an image on your hand is superior than pulling a screen out of your pocket.

Then convinced a bunch of VCs to let them build it.

@davemark @markgurman I feel like it’s more that they convinced a bunch of VCs that people are sick of their smart phones, but they really aren’t.

The whole pitch to me falls flat when wearables (smart watches) already exist that seamlessly integrate with the phone number you already have, the messaging apps you already have, etc…

So I've got something a little more sophisticated I want to build with #VisionPro's 3D canvas, and the biggest hitch was figuring out how to snap an object to a detected plane.

Thanks to some REALLY complicated sample code from Apple, I built up a proof of concept that raycasts from the device's position and orientation and projects a dropzone onto detected planes

You can see it moving from the desk to the top of the encyclopedia here

Ice Cubes have some very visible slowdown when scrolling the timeline on the Vision Pro. I’ve tried everything I can, and I can’t isolate it. The profiler gives me nothing interesting, and I’ve been attempting to remove every view one by one and come to no real conclusion. I have no idea what is going on. My guess is that it’s the iOS micro stutters people are telling me about but more visible but I’m not even sure anymore.

    ellenich,
    @ellenich@techhub.social avatar

@dimillian My first suspect would be the glass on glass effect.

Maybe background blur + darker background blur on top is effecting performance?

Anyone happen to have a working example of moving and rotating a RealityKit entity using a DragGesture and RotateGesture3D?

This is what I’ve got so far and the drag gesture works fine but the rotate gesture is flaky. Not sure if that’s my approach that’s wrong or the simulator not handling gestures in 3D well.

Did you know that you can just drag and drop a file into #macOS Open and Save dialogs?

(I know I risk being incredibly obvious, but I was reminded recently that not all of you younglings know this 😇)

Screen recording of me clicking the “Add attachment” button on Mastodon’s compose new post interface, opening the macOS system’s Open Dialog. Then I drag and drop a file from the Desktop to said dialog, which automatically selects it, instead of having to browse the file system

My FineWoven Magnetic Link watch band finally arrived (dark green).

It's not as nice as Apple's leather predecessor (left, navy), but looks and feels more premium than Alma's alcantara (right, orange). Hops (background, brown) is nicer than all three.

These bands are VERY comfortable and fashion-versatile, as long as you don't often get them wet. I've worn the leather ones a lot in the winter. The FineWoven seems like a successful replacement for day one — we'll see how they age.

Three magnetic-link watch straps in a row, from left to right: Apple’s previous navy leather, Apple’s new green FineWoven, and Alma’s orange alcantara.

@viticci If Apple announces M3 Macs next week, I wonder if they’ll leave the Vision Pro on M2? Or it will also be upgraded before it ships?

Seems like it could benefit from the additional GPU power the M3 will have.
