hello netherlands you mean to tell me I don't need to download a separate app for every local transportation system for every city I visit but can simply use my existing credit, debit, or EC card as both payment and ticket?

My feeble German mind cannot comprehend this

dpprdan,

I'm curious what you think of the Dutch health system!

Me trying to explain modern development practices to normies:
Me: yeah, we don’t know how long it will take, or how much it will cost, tbh we don’t really know what we’re going to make. We need to figure that out. Get a feel for the people and the problem, make some stuff that seems useful and see how it goes.
Them: What kind of hippie bullshit is this???
Me: You should’ve seen the crap we made when we thought we knew what we were doing…
Them: Who would go along with this nonsense?
Me: … the people who had to deal with what we made before…?
Them: What part of this even partially resembles Engineering???
Me: so… the thing… that we’ll figure out is the thing we should make?
Them: yeah?
Me: Well, we’ll do that… But At Scale!
Them: what on earth does that even mean??? Gimme my money back!!!

Should I teach bash, fish, or Nushell to data scientists who want to go beyond the basics of shell scripting? There seems to be a clear spectrum from "ubiquitous but m'gawd" to "this is the future but m'gawd in a different way".

dpprdan,

@gvwilson teach'em good #bash basics because it's ubiquitous and encourage them to use their language of choice (#Python, #RStats, #Julia) for the more complex stuff.
bash basics = including things to setup more advanced Docker images, see e.g. https://github.com/rocker-org/rocker-versioned2/tree/master/scripts

I'm resurrecting a TMAX TM800W610L 8" Windows tablet (2GB RAM/32GB [slow] SSD) from over five years ago to use as a weather display for my Tempest weather station.

After getting openssh and VNC on it, the latest Golang installed perfectly.

After a

go install github.com/hrbrmstr/go-weatherflow@latest

it looks like I'll be able to make a self-contained web server app!

What's the issue with remoting with VSCode?

I can't connect to our container registry from anymore because unceremoniously removed support from their extension last month. They say it "will be moved to a separate [as yet unpublished] extension.” https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items/ms-azuretools.vscode-docker/changelog#user-content-1.27.0---16-october-2023:~:text=GitLab%20Container%20Registry%20support%20will%20be%20moved%20to%20a%20separate%20extension

The same release added registry support and retained separate support. This essay from last year about as an onramp to Microsoft lock-in is looking more and more accurate: https://ghuntley.com/fracture/

"... wouldn't have been so cavalier..."
No, they actually added GitHub Container Registry support in the same version. 😎

I'm debugging an issue today that requires understanding distributed systems, floating point underflow, and also "half up" rounding.

    #rstats question:

does anyone know if it's possible (and how) to check which libraries in a script are actually used? As in have at least a function call in said script.

I have long script with a ton of library calls at the top and I am pretty sure not all of them are used, but except for iteratively remove libraries one by one and watch the script burn, but I don't know how else to test it.
