Just read this wonderful article from Carrie-Ann Lightly talking about how certain terms used widely just aren’t that helpful to disabled people. It reenforces my argument that we all think differently, and we must push back against the idea that we are one big harmogenous group. https://www.carrieannlightley.com/post/why-terms-like-fully-accessible-don-t-help-disabled-people

Observing recent chatter about 'Bookshare'—a decade ago, my views on its necessity were met with resistance. 📚🗣️ But in 2024, do such services hold
the same relevance, or have they become anachronisms like talking book libraries and DAISY books? What's the next chapter for #Accessibility? #Blind #Disability #ICanBuy BooksNow

doubletap,

@Lottie Hey Charlotte. You bring up a very interesting point. I’d love to get you on our show to share those thoughts so we can discuss this further. It definitely gives us a new perspective.

doubletap,

@weirdwriter @Lottie You’re always welcome my friend. I’d love your perspective on this.

So I’m just going to say it. I’m so confused about Bookshare. I hear people talk about it and it sounds amazing with so many titles - over 1.2 million. I can even access it (if I had an account) via my Victor Reader Stream which would be awesome as UK folks don’t have a Bard or NLS equivalent via the Stream. But is it what I think it is? It seems I need to be an organisation or be in a team that supports sensory impairment. There doesn’t seem to be a way to sign up as an individual. And then the next question is if I did get access, does it contain all the books I’d want, like thrillers and the latest reads, or is it an educational resource only. It feels like something is locked behind a door and I’d love someone to explain what’s inside.

RareBird_15, to headphones

To , does anyone have any suggestions for a pair of noise canceling purchasable on that can connect to my computer running , preferrably wirelessly or through Bluetooth. It's even better if they can somehow also connect to a second device and let me hear when my mom calls my . This would be something I could use with my computer on days when our dogs are barking a lot so I don't get such bad . Of course, they need to also either not have software for the computer, or that software needs to be somewhat . My budget right now is about $80, but I may have up to $120 or so if I wait a day or two.
@mastoblind

doubletap,

@RareBird_15 @mastoblind Hey I tried these Steel Series Arctis 9 headphones which are really pleasant to wear with great sound. They can connect via a dongle to your pc and via Bluetooth to your iPhone and you can use both at the same time without the need to switch. The headphones are big over ear design so it depends what you’re looking for but they are pretty comfortable for me at least. Price varies around the world and it might be a little over your budget but I thought it might be worth letting you know about regardless. https://amzn.eu/d/7eDcxuV

doubletap,

@RareBird_15 @mastoblind Oh and one more thing. No software is required to use these. Just plug in the dongle and make sure you set your windows sound settings to the headphones. iPhone Bluetooth setup is the same as other devices.

So I may have completely bricked my orbit reader, 20. Also, everything seems to be in French. I think it’s safe to say it’s not going well LOL

doubletap,

@FreakyFwoof Managed to fix it thank goodness. You’re right - it didn’t want to die! Got it on eBay so was hoping it wasn’t a wreck on arrival but despite one dot not popping up it seems ok so far.
