Is it just me or has the quality of new metal music dipped a bit this year? There’s some good stuff but not a lot of absolute standouts for me so far.

Yeah you might be right. So far I have 2 absolute standouts this year (Priest and Xion) followed by a couple of really good ones like Coltre, Cloven Hoof, Exhorder, Dickinson, ...well actually this year is good too. But 2023 had Obituary 🤷

Correction: they might not have funded them in the same way as they do now with the right wing parties.

@MetalheadDana it was cringeworthy how so many pololiticians from the socialist and communist* party in Austria had a hard time distancing themselves from Putin.

*yes they really are a thing in Austria and are quite strong regionally because they do down to earth politics FOR the people.

There is a newish charging station in the town center of Szombathely (🇭🇺), and it actually works and is not occupied by ICE cars!
I am equally impressed as I am surprised!
Also it seems like they reduced the prices per kWh to 225HUF (~0,57€)

@Dad_Wood es ist in Österreich das gleiche Drama. Esoterik ist hier ganz groß angesagt. Beinahe alle Freibäder und Badeteiche bei uns in der Umgebung werben damit, dass man bei ihnen in belebtem Granderwasser baden kann.

Sollen die Leute doch Deppensteuer zahlen, aber ich will diesen Blödsinn nicht mit Steuergeld fördern!

I don't know Sonata Arctica and I didn't know about their existence until @Dad_Wood tooted about them.

Judging from the name and the artwork I expected Nightwish style melodic/symphonic metal from Finland 🇫🇮

Turns out the latter was correct, and for the other stuff?

Ok I have to confess, I never liked symphonic melodic metal. I never liked Nightwish or Within Temptation and consorts.

The Ninth Hour is exactly this. And suuuuper cheesy. Cringeworthy cheesy.

It has some good songs in the beginning though, that's why I'll give it 2/5.

@Dad_Wood das verstehe ich schon, die sind zeitweise echt kurzweilig und mir macht diese Metaljourney auch Spaß!
Manche Lieder sind nur extrem hart anzuhören, so kitschig ist das.

Aber ja, es ist schon zeitintensiv und geht nur wenn ich mal Phasen mit weniger Meetings habe. Zu lange Pausen sind nämlich auch schlecht, dann verlierst du den Flow irgendwie. Aber es ist schon faszinierend zu sehen, wie sich eine Band entwickelt.
Bei Amorphis war es ähnlich. Meine liebsten Journeys waren Death, Carcass und Type-O-Negative. Und eigentlich auch Amorphis.
