Dammit I have to watch a movie and take notes (for research purposes) and my weird-ass headmeat is screaming DON'T WANNA

At least it wasn't filmed this century so the camerawork and colour balance isn't going to turn it into a smeary beige blur in front of my (damaged) eyeballs.

@cstross Which movie is it?

darkobserver,

@cstross Ah.. Horror classics, both. Have fun watching it.

The satirical police procedural TV series "Sledge Hammer" ran from 1986 to 1988. David Rasche played the sexist, violent, and generally misguided Hammer. The show was bounced around time slots and was losing audience, so the network decided it would end after one season.

To end the season with a bang -- literally -- the last episode featured a final scene with Hammer attempting to disarm a planted nuclear bomb. "Trust me; I know what I'm doing!" he says -- his standard catch phrase -- as he rotates the tip of the bomb.

Which promptly explodes in a nuclear blast, after which we see the ruins of (supposedly) San Francisco.

The last episode drew such a large audience, however, that the network decided they wanted a second season. This presented a problem for obvious continuity reasons.

So, a second season was tagged "the early years" and supposedly took place years prior to the first season as a prequel. It ultimately lost its audience and that was the end. No nuke needed to finish the second season.

Trust me; I know what I'm doing!

@haploc @lauren Here in Germany to a certain age group that show has cult status. There are DVD boxes available on amazon.de, with tons of extras. If you absolutely want to get it, you can.

If you'd like to understand the link between the current #AI fixation of Silicon Valley billionaires and its roots in #eugenics and racism I highly recommend reading this series of articles. The term #TESCREAL has been created to summarize the different movements, some of them decades old, that are in play here. Eye-opening, alarming stuff, to be sure. https://www.truthdig.com/dig-series/eugenics/ Warning: This isn't something for fast consumption, other than most websites people link to these days.

If you are someone working in #IT or #itsecurity I highly recommend the books by British #SF author #CharlesStross especially his Laundry Files series of novels. Why? Well, he's one of us! No other author I've read actually knows his way around a CLI, has administered computers himself and still cares about #Linux & other geeky IT stuff like Charlie. Ok, the other exception being #nealstephenson who used to be an engineer and famously had one of his protagonists use the #emacs editor in #Cryptonomicon. He's here on Mastodon @cstross and one of the nicest "famous" people to follow since he actually replies to and engages his followers while others just push their latest work and ignore your comments or questions.

So the band "German Oak" the record obviously has like some sorta WWII thing going on and the song titles are all stuff like "Out Of The Bunker" and the record is dedicated to "Our dads who had a rough time in the war" - okay - okay - obviously some flags, could go either way, but---

the band said they recorded the stuff in the early 70s and then someone else said "I'll put this out" and titled the band, the record, the songs, designed everything and they had no say!

So it's okay!

    @puffer @Robotron Are these bands or albums? According to Discogs Rasa's other albums were named not so

    @puffer @Robotron duh Sorry, I just saw your reply & didn't open the full thread & hence didn't notice you were replying to this one. Napster was extremely popular over here in Germany but maybe not as much in the U.S. then.

    @stina_marie @horror Love how the show is shaping up to become the 2nd best season since the first. But you never know, maybe it'll drop the ball just before it ends but somehow I doubt that. The name Cohle popping up unexpectedly had me exclaim "Hah" ;-)

    @Robotron Wow.. that's an impressive collection. @puffer Question for you yinyl pros: How do you sort your records? Alphabetically, by artist (and if yes, based on first name/word in a band's name or last?) By release date? A combination of these? There seem to be lots of options.

    @darkobserver@ioc.exchange avatar

    @puffer @Robotron Found you guys because Puffer liked my toot about the movie WAZ (thanks for that btw). Incidentally I've recently bought a new turntable myself to be able to listen to the (small) collection of 70s/80s vinyl records I inherited from my brother which I had been lugging around for over 20 years, move after move & then stored in my father's attic for some time. I'm also interested in new releases or classics I might have missed, so I hope to pick up on some stuff by following you

    darkobserver,
    @darkobserver@ioc.exchange avatar

    @puffer @Robotron If you're REALLY interested I'll post a few covers while I go through them more or less randomly. Many have the cardboard of their covers coming apart because of age & bad storage conditions. There's also a handful without any cover stuck in between. I intend to catalogue them all and then sort them somehow. My brother was sort of a 70s counter culture type, long hair, lots of drugs, you get the picture. So there's this wild mix of hard rock classics, psychedelic/meditative music like flute pieces played in a pyramid, early electronic music asf. The Dude Jeff Lebowski would have liked him, I guess.
