I find programs / applications that assume all storage is an SSD so infuriating, especially when it is blatent laziness or extremely uneseccary.

For instance, #dota only starts loading character models once you enter a lobby. If you use a harddrive you will be kicked (abandon) for inactivity before your screen unfreezes from loading assets... #valve the only way to solve this is to play a match against bots first

Having to buy 80 euro of 'fallen out of the truck' batteries for my #purism librem5 phone because they won't ship outside of US.

Curious how much of an eBay / aliexpress dispute pain this is going to be.

Really sad this is the only way for me to get replacement batteries for this phone to this day..

dantalion,

@RL_Dane yes, although I mostly keep it on my desk with the battery removed, I wrote a blog post about this experience: https://dantalion.nl/2023/09/03/purism-librem5-daily-driver-tips.html

After stubbornly maintaining postfix mail relays/forwarding for many of my domains, I decided to stop the practice. I just am not good at it and I have lost a lot of comms over the years, including occasional business correspondence (that was the first thing that moved me off this system)

Interestingly, now I'm getting emails from lists I must have been on and soft bouncing for the past few years that I completely forgot about.

dantalion,

@chris_gammell I switching from maintaining my own postfix config to mailcow, a complete dockerized mailsuite and its been great ever since :) https://mailcow.email/ Might be worth the shot?

Quite astonishing how a lot of laptop hardware depreciates in value. You can pick up some pretty good/extendable hardware from a 4 years ago for <200 euro these days.

dantalion,

@drwhax given the failure rate, I' m not suprised. I'm on my third this decade because one has a broken unreplacable keyboard and the other shuts off if you lift or move it. I have also had to replace internal display cables three times or so

this is an aircraft avionics mystery! it's made by Bendix, but i have no part number because the cover is missing (bought it this way from our local electronics flea market). as this video shows, i got it to work, and this thread explains how...

video/mp4

dantalion,

@tubetime its typical to see 'log' pots consist of two or three different gradients like you see on the orange line here. Whats most interesting to me is the 'deadzone' of the green pot I don't think I have seen that before

Actually finished a project for once, both the hardware and firmware. I now have a nice little adapter for my playstation 2 taiko no tatsujin controller #electronics

Here are instructions if, for whatever reason, you also want to build one
https://github.com/TT-392/playstation_adapter_pcb

dantalion,

@TT_392 Neat I bought mine on ebay but there is so much more learning and satisfaction in doing it yourself ^^

switching to the #librem5 was one of the most liberating decisions this year. Even with all the little earlier adopter issues and inconveinces. I have developed a lot of tricks, workarounds and solutions. Wonder if I should write a blog post about them..

I went on a quest to find out if AI is already secretly writing a lot of the stuff we read online. I found more than I ever imagined.

From online recipes to mattress reviews to celebrity horoscopes, human writing is fast becoming the exception on the internet, rather than the rule.

My story today: https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2023/05/05/ai-spam-websites-books-chatgpt/

dantalion,

@willoremus just google any "top 10 of x or best of x 2023" literally each of these "review" sites is autogenerated garbage

This strain of COVID isn’t as bad as alpha was in 2020. But it’s still pretty annoying. Some symptoms gone after a night of sleep, downside, replaced with other symptoms. Fascinating disease.

dantalion,

@drwhax ive been having a running nose and a cough for 8/12 weeks straight now, annoying is definitely the right word
