Doing another AP randomizer with only Doom E1-3 (no Heretic) so I can finish it in 3-ish hours instead of 9+ lol

Since I finished Torchlight last night, I'm giving myself a break from it tonight, and doing something else I've had on my mind: an Archipelago featuring all 6 episodes of OG + .

Strap in for a long one. (There will be a ~20 minute break around 6:30 PM ET)

Someone posts on the Wrath steam discussions forum asking for a clearly-visible indicator of which levels you've completed when you're in a hub.

This is beyond a reasonable feature request - it's more surprising that it wasn't implemented to begin with. This kind of conveyance has existed in Quake community paks for a decade. Hell, even OG Quake sealed off episodes you've completed - in 1996.

And yet this topic is apparently a magnet for elitist/ableist bros who can't resist dunking on someone desiring this extremely common table-stakes feature.

Sure, let's victim-blame because there can't possibly be any valid reason why a player could benefit from assistance in remembering which portals they've visited. E.g. not having time to play the game for multiple days consecutively, or losing one's place after spending a long time in a big level (potentially across multiple play sessions).

It's elitist and toxic dipshits like this that ruin the boomer shooter community.

I honestly worry that I'll have to put up with more of this whenever I finally do get to playing more Doom wads.

Celeste by @EXOK

After the Celeste 64 mod I did, I thought of finally finishing this game after years abandoned. I was about 1/3th in and mostly left all berries.

It’s only fun with a good dpad and apparently the Switch Pro controller has an horrendous one, probably the reason I bailed the 1st time, but now I switched to an 8bitdo pad and had so much more joy with it!

Truly fun when you air ballet in the endgame and a good/deep story for a 2D platformer as well

cney,
@cney@mastodon.social avatar

@wiedo Oh yeah dude, switch pro controllers are highway robbery, costing more than an xbox one/series controller and having a completely dysfunctional dpad.

When I first bought a Switch and a pro controller, the first two games I played were Shovel Knight (I speedran Specter of Torment) and Puyo Puyo Tetris. Phantom diagonal inputs are EXTREMELY BAD for both of those use cases.

The controller situation for Switch is a big part of why I never touch the console anymore.

After playing an Archipelago with Heretic E1, I got the idea in my head to do a double-shareware Doom/Heretic E1 randomizer. Doing that tonight since allergies got the better of me today; hopefully will be back to Celeste 64 for Bee Sides tomorrow.

(Also if you saw my stream live but me clearly not there a few minutes ago, blame OBS, it somehow rebound "start streaming" to... the alt key.)

So uh, if you thought either or (dot com) were safe from AI bros... think again. If you use the latter, keep on the lookout for an opt-out setting coming soon.

https://www.404media.co/tumblr-and-wordpress-to-sell-users-data-to-train-ai-tools/ (Portions of article screenshotted with alt text because f**k login walls)

Automattic plans to launch a new setting on Wednesday that will allow users to opt-out of data sharing with third parties, including AI companies, according to the source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, and internal documents. A new FAQ section we reviewed is titled “What happens when you opt out?” states that “If you opt out from the start, we will block crawlers from accessing your content by adding your site on a disallowed list. If you change your mind later, we also plan to update any partners about people who newly opt-out and ask that their content be removed from past sources and future training.” 404 Media has asked Automattic how it accidentally compiled data that it shouldn’t share, and whether any of that content was shared with OpenAI, but did not immediately hear back from the company. 404 Media asked Automattic about an imminent deal with Midjourney last week but did not hear back then, either.
Another internal document shows that, on February 23, an employee asked in a staff-only thread, “Do we have assurances that if a user opts out of their data being shared with third parties that our existing data partners will be notified of such a change and remove their data?” Andrew Spittle, Automattic’s head of AI replied: “We will notify existing partners on a regular basis about anyone who's opted out since the last time we provided a list. I want this to be an ongoing process where we regularly advocate for past content to be excluded based on current preferences. We will ask that content be deleted and removed from any future training runs. I believe partners will honor this based on our conversations with them to this point. I don't think they gain much overall by retaining it.” Automattic did not respond to a question from 404 Media about whether it could guarantee that people who opt out will have their data deleted retroactively.
News about a deal between Tumblr and Midjourney has been rumored and speculated about on Tumblr for the last week. Someone claiming to be a former Tumblr employee announced in a Tumblr blog post that the platform was working on a deal with Midjourney, and the rumor made it onto Blind, an app for verified employees of companies to anonymously discuss their jobs. 404 Media has seen the Blind posts, in which what seems like an Automattic employee says, “I'm not sure why some of you are getting worked up or worried about this. It's totally legal, and sharing it publicly is perfectly fine since it's right there in the terms & conditions. So, go ahead and spread the word as much as you can with your friends and tech journalists, it's totally fine.” Separately, 404 Media viewed a public, now-deleted post by Gage, the product manager, where he said that he was deleting all of his images off of Tumblr, and would be putting them on his personal website. A still-live post says, “i've deleted my photography from tumblr and will be moving it slowly but surely over to cylegage.com, which i'm building into a photography portfolio that i can control end-to-end.” At one point last week, his personal website had a specific note stating that he did not consent to AI scraping of his images. Gage’s original post has been deleted, and his website is now a blank page that just reads “Cyle.” Gage did not respond to a request for comment from 404 Media.

Welp, Doom Infinite immediately goes into the same bucket as RoboQuest as something that would be really good if it didn't also have completely asshole game design that sometimes just outright kills the player while giving them zero agency in the matter.

Surprise, I'm playing tonight. Picked an interesting map I forgot I'd seen cross my radar a few weeks ago. The scary thing is this is not the first M. C. Escher inspired Quake map I've ever played.

@remilia I never really think about it but I guess at this point I've probably spent more time with Quake than any other FPS too (well, with the exception of TF2 in the 2000's).

Like...about 729 hours. https://cney.stream/bqtn/

Eventually I might do the same with Doom...

Virtua Unlimited Project demo verdict: Absolutely wears its Mega Man X/Zero/ZX influences on its sleeve. Can be quite fun, as long as you can put up with the sometimes hilariously wonky translation. Has 3 difficulties if you want a challenge, esp. on bosses (whose patterns are sometimes ridiculously dense given your large hitbox).

Avoid using the dash attack, unless you like bonking into enemies that don't die in one hit and consequently taking damage.

Berserk Boy demo verdict: clearly inspired by Mega Man (likely Zero/ZX in particular) along with perhaps some Gunvolt and Mighty No. 9 (except actually good). Lots of fun, with mostly-great movement and flow, other than a couple of hiccups involving wall-jumping mechanics.

I bought Anopek a while ago, after seeing it shown during Realms Deep 2021. I still haven't played it, and now seems like an appropriate time, just having finished the Blake Stone games, as it's also a tile-based FPS, but also with metroidvania elements.

QDOOM is pretty interesting to play, but is definitely most interesting/enjoyable with the Doom monsters. It also has a Quake monster mode but that's pretty much a 1:1 mapping, which means Oops All Fiends at the end of e1m7 and e1m8, which is... rough.
