Huge personal milestone unlocked in 2024: I've managed to qualify to join the SFWA, and will be able to attend the Nebula conference and speak on a couple of panels.

I so seldom get to participate in the writing community in this deep a manner, and wow am I PUMPED.

#WritersCoffeeClub 1/21 Do you know your ending before you start writing?

Sometimes! Of the two books currently published, I knew the ending for one of them in advance.

My current WIP I had a beginning and a single image for the climax, and wrote towards it. 90% of the ending grew from that image, but I didn't know all of it in advance.

#writerscoffeeclub Jan 4 What aspects of your current or former profession do you bring into your writing?

I'm an MD (Ob/Gyn). That is very helpful indeed when it comes to medical aspects of the characters.

And I'm offering free advice for ob/gyn questions to all writers who are interested. For selfish reasons - if I read one more dramatic birth scene that's completely unreal, I'm gonna scream.

Lots of talk in #WritersCoffeeClub today about not giving brands free product placement... does anyone think brands might pay to not be the evil villain in a futuristic #cyberpunk work? Reverse product placement? Or maybe this would be considered blackmail? Hmm...

@NaraMoore I suppose that, just to be on the safe side, I will not write Disney as the next megacorporate villain in my next cyberpunk book.

11.16 — What ancillary writing apps / sites do you find the most useful?

I've written about 20 novels and several novellas using Scrivener. When I need a word processor with formatting I turn to LibreOffice. But that's increasingly rare these days and I mostly compose text in Markdown using neovim.

Pet hate: Microsoft Word, which I pay a license fee for because I get to check the tracked changes on a copy-edited novel ONCE A YEAR and can't risk tripping over a bug in LO.

booksthatgoboom,
@booksthatgoboom@nerdculture.de avatar

@cstross Thinking of switching to Scrivener now that my Word Docs have all become a billboard for Microsoft to try to sell me more cloud space.

Can you expand on what you mean by "word processor with formatting?" I'd rather not get into a three-software situation with my writing, does Scrivener not have formatting? Or is it not good?

Hey there Mastodonians.

Last week I lost my #job for the 3rd time in 2023: once to a bankruptcy, once to a toxic CEO, and last week due to an re-org by a parent company that eliminated my position.

Background in #solar #sales #leadership and fiction writing (MFA in creative #writing). Can you pass this around and reply if you have any job leads? I have 0 runway left at this point.

In an effort to enhance my community here I just mass-followed a dozen or so interesting-looking folks with #cyberpunk in their profiles. I have been spending more time on social media lately, but not as much on Mastodon.

Going to try to take a more direct hand in the shape of my digital community here and elsewhere. If you are someone I randomly followed without any interaction, you now know why!

#WritersCoffeeClub 14: Many writers own cats. Is pet ownership essential for your writing?

My wife and I have added two dogs to our family, and it has tremendously enriched our lives. I do object to the notion of ownership, however.

A cat or dog is a living thing with its own personality that feels emotions like love. You shouldn't treat it as an object or adornment for your life. You should be ready for it to have its own idea about how to live. You should also definitely get one.

#WritersCoffeeClub 10/1: What's your WIP and what's it about?

There are two I'm kind of bouncing between at the moment.

"Singularity's Edge" (just shy of 10k words so far) is about a bomb disposal robot that gains sentience just as the human world is beginning to collapse. It's dark, and depressing, and not fun to write.

"The Scrimshaw Sorceress" (24500 words so far) is more fun, it's a post-apocalyptic story that takes place about 1000 years after aliens colonize Earth's oceans.

booksthatgoboom,
@booksthatgoboom@nerdculture.de avatar

@seanpatrickphd Hah, I thoroughly enjoy writing dark an horrible things about the collapse of society. Maybe it's cathartic for me or I am terrible. Or maybe it's a Zom 100 thing where I am fantasizing about freedom coming through the end of the Rat Race...

Hey there fellow #authors - the #Microsoft Word garbage pile has finally grown too high. After 2 weeks of editing, it decided that I was not me, and somehow displayed all my changes NEXT TO the original, so for instance I had changed "heart" to "chest," and it was displayed as "heartchest." This was done hundreds of times across like 40 pages. I'm about done.

What apps do you all love to use to write, and why? Please halp!

booksthatgoboom,
@booksthatgoboom@nerdculture.de avatar

@dreadpir8robots Yeah, to be fair to the spiders I haven't used it for a few months. Today's adventure involved grabbing the propane tank to get refilled, little knowing that it now belonged to a very large wolf spider.

booksthatgoboom,
@booksthatgoboom@nerdculture.de avatar

@dreadpir8robots Last fall there was a pretty big yellow garden spider that built a web in the corner of my garage door. It shook every time I opened it, but it was never in the way, so we co-existed peacefully. Eventually it got cold out, and one day when I opened the garage door, the spider was dead just beneath the web. That one actually made me sad.

But wolf spiders hiding under things can fuck right off (I didn't kill him, but he was certainly not invited back).

So in my experience #cyberpunk works tend to be terrestrial cities, and we don’t really explore colonies on other worlds or maybe there aren’t humans on other worlds. But I wouldn’t say that’s foundational to the genre. What books do you all love that are “cyberpunk in space”? #scifi #spaceopera #bookstodon
