The next step in online social media will be group blogs that support the APIs needed to integrate with not only the Fediverse, but other non-AP services that have their own APIs.
Each one will have a theme, a voice, not all writers in agreement of course, but sharing a similar perspective, context, point of view.
@davew The funny thing is, this was also the explicit goal of Ghost when it was launched. Which has got some of the way there and is now pushing independent journalism forward in particular. I'm with you. We need more!
@davew I think writer sustainability is an important part of the puzzle and I genuinely love where Ghost is innovating. I’m also very bullish on ActivityPub.
But those things aren’t enough - exploring the act of writing and reflection, and the community that comes from those activities, is really important. And we haven’t seen innovation there since the blog, really.
@nlovsund I find that very depressing, to be honest. I get that they'd have a field day, but I don't think they should dictate the conversation. We should be advocating for more openness, not less.
@nlovsund I intellectually understand that but it doesn't resonate for me personally. National identity is something I don't feel, and I'd strongly resist the idea of a nation trying to impose it upon me.
@nlovsund Interesting! Yeah, I've got pogroms and civil wars in my background too, but it came together in a different way. Neither is "right" - it's all just different. Lots of versions of being a human and defining our identities.
I get that it's actually a terrible business and a wonderful way to burn your life savings down to the ground, but it would be so much fun to run a little neighborhood café. Great coffee? Organic nibbles? Live music? Themed nights? Free meeting space for radical groups looking to mobilize? Bliss.
@mitch Counterpoint: it puts the emphasis on the coffee rather than the space. I'm really thinking of a café like a pub: a third space living room to hang out in.
@Gargron It should be, and maybe it even is, but until someone actually stops them from doing it, the problem persists. Some lightweight protections feel important in that context.
A climate scientist becoming the first woman president of Mexico feels like such a big deal. I'm not deeply familiar with Mexican politics, but to my eyes she seems really great.
