Yesterday I saw people trying to lure naive Twitter users onto their "protest" instances W/O explaining the meta defederation plans up front.

That's ... deeply uncool behavior. IMHO.

Home.social peeps especially: you're keeping track of your current admin's plan, right?

You likely can't migrate directly to/from gated communities. Or see anyone outside them.

Don't lose all your stuff a second time. Start making decisions now.

Facebook (aka Meta) is planning to start a Mastodon instance. For various reasons, this equals Mastodon admin drama.

Is your admin on this list? But also check your server's About page. If it doesn't even mention Meta, you're probably OK. If it does, you have a problem.

Some of these instances are planning to ALSO defederate any servers that don't block Meta.

That will block huge servers (mastodon.social / world, universodon.com, assorted techie and infosec instances, etc.). You might have lots of follows on them.

Look over your lists, see where people are located. Figure out who/how many you'll be losing.

Decide what you want to do before your admin takes your choice away. If you want to move, do it sooner, not later.

Really feel like mastodon's design doesn't prioritize protecting users from the actions of a malicious admin enough. If the pitch is "if the admin tries to burn things down then you can move" then for that pitch to work it can't be that an admin can torch everything before you have time to react

Yes, they can always take the instance down immediately and in its entirety, but thats not what I'm talking about. But hey actually, if that happens there should still be a way to recover and move your account

EDIT: "make backups" is not a solution because the most valuable part of a social graph is people who follow you, and those cannot be backed up

@eniko When mastodon.lol and home.social's owners shut them down after getting angry at arguments on the internet, thousands of accounts (literally) vanished, along with all their content. Mastodon just looks the other way when this sort of thing happens.

One of my biggest wishes with James Gunn's new #DCU is that we finally get the Question in live action. Since Gunn is known to push lesser known characters and groups I think we have a bigger chance of this happening. Fingers crossed! 🤞

Well, I am not thrilled about having to #migrate. I get the issues, but the timing sucks, and I sure wish it was possible just to keep the status quo. Not that anyone has asked for my .02...but since when has that ever stopped me from commenting?? 🙄 Stand by for migration antics fairly soon.

@JulieNye Yeah, it's not great, but it's doable.

Thing is, everyone on home.social will be losing all their old posts unless they take steps to preserve some or all of them. I'm not sure everyone's aware of this?

@JulieNye In case it helps, here's what I did.

Right after setting up new acct but before(!) doing any linking with the home.social one:

Preferences / Other / Posting Privacy / Unlisted

You can now use the new acct to boost your home.social posts w/o flooding either followers or the Local feed. When done, reset new acct to Public; then start the process of linking accts, uploading data files, etc.

@HistoPol @JulieNye I searched to find out what Unlisted actually does, and tested a few posts first to make certain it worked in the new place. YMMV, but seems OK.

I'd saved information about this when mastodon.lol shut down (just in case!). But I couldn't remember where I'd squirreled it away and had to start from scratch. Sigh.
