Didn’t realize going into it just how much assembling a garden drip irrigation system involves holding two pieces of plastic tightly and pressing them into one another as hard as I can. Gonna have several blisters after this I think

I can’t be the only person who can’t read any news/editorial sites on my phone because of all the animated ads constantly make Safari crash…can I??

amber,

@cferdinandi ok phew, it doesnt happen on my husbands iphone 14 pro, but is constant on my regular iphone14 and i wanted to make sure it wasnt something wrong on my phone bc it seems so prevalent!!

Accepting almost* everything in eventually falls but agreeing w/ @chriscoyier here.

"Technologies do tend to come and go.... But when tech gets big enough, it tends to not go. is huge, and it’s been huge every second of my entire web dev career. To me it echos social media in a way. In the middle days of Facebook, it’s demise was often predicted.... But it didn’t, and it’s demise is no longer predicted. It’s too big to fail. So too is ."

@davidbisset I don't often disagree with @chriscoyier but I do here - I've already seen a lot less job openings/requests for React type things. Perhaps it'll never go away completely, but like other libraries, I think it'll be a minority case, even w/ WP Gutenberg

amber,
@amber@front-end.social avatar

@davidbisset Also isn't FB usage plummeting? I know it's mostly just the olds using it now. It's lasted longer than others, but eventually everything dies in tech. @chriscoyier

Dear #CSS gods,

please let us specify object-position x and y separately in future. This sucks:

Oh great, latest pet insurance renewal is due.

£50 more expensive, and much worse policy. Amazing.

  • Pre existing conditions; no longer covered.
  • Now 20% of any vet fees are payable in addition to the excess.
  • Pay monthly? Cancellations are impossible after you make a claim.
  • Legal advice helpline no longer exists.

And the Tories are pushing for this style of health coverage for us humans too. Get fucked. Fight for the NHS, fight to stop conglomorates buying up Vet practices.

amber,
@amber@front-end.social avatar

@mattwilcox yea this is why ive never bothered with it tbh

amber,
@amber@front-end.social avatar

@mattwilcox it's a privilege but i have enough in savings + credit capacity to cover it if it happens - had a chronically ill dog once and it was still cheaper to fund his care myself than what insurance was asking

amber, to react
@amber@front-end.social avatar

I've been in this industry long enough to see things constantly come & go. #React is no different - it'll be replaced by other frameworks soon & those will be hot for a bit. Then that one will be replaced & so on. Learn your basics! #HTML #CSS, plain #JS. Those are the only things that don't come & go & will take you through your entire career, regardless of what's cool right now. Will I still be coding #WordPress in 10 years? Who knows! But my knowledge of #PHP will carry me on.

amber,
@amber@front-end.social avatar

Spend your time learning about #accessibility and #semantics not frameworks. Choose the correct framework for the project, not just what's fun and cool. Think about the client in future - how hard will it be for them to find someone else to work on it? You may not make money from that decision, but it's the moral one to do.

When you suddenly become aware of two Americans talking and pronouncing “button” as “buh-un” and you’re desperately trying to ignore it but it’s like a child prodding you relentlessly and you end up on a side mission in your head trying to convince yourself it’s not irritating, it’s just an accent, stop noticing it but another part is screaming “here, you dropped half the word. Two t’s! Two! So hard are they trying to exist!”

amber,
@amber@front-end.social avatar

@mattwilcox lol WHUT, the british drop the t's ALL the time! I actually read "buh-un" in my friend's accent lol

On the same day a 2 year old starved to death, alll the noise of the continuing tory civil war is over a policy to send a maximum of 200 people a year to Rwanda, at a cost of £169k per person, according to Priti Vacant Patel's own figures. No grandstanding Tory resignations over the offer of £42 compensation to victims of child abuse. 150 judges can be found suddenly down the back of the sofa, while rape victims wait seven years to get in front of a judge.

amber,
@amber@front-end.social avatar

@brucelawson also, not the most important in the face of the other horrible crap going on...but why/how does it cost £169k to send each person to Rwanda???? This world is so fucked.

my gawd sub-grid has been widely supported for awhile now. i can NOT keep up any more. it used to take like 10 years to get one feature

the biggest stressor of being a dev is always feeling like you're barely keeping your head above water in terms of "keeping up" with all the languages, frameworks, and technologies, and constantly feeling like you're on a different planet. Being a tech lead adds even more pressure bc you feel like you're supposed to know everything but really the youngins know more.

Is there any particular way of building websites that you're nostolgic for?

amber,
@amber@front-end.social avatar

@chriscoyier yea, simple. plain html and css.

Wasn't there a bunch of large websites that recently dumped #react ? Anyone have a list of those? Preferably ones that didn't go to yet abother JS framework

How has no one talked about this (new?) advanced selector in nth pseudos??

.parent-class :nth-child(2 of .child-class)

amber, to random
@amber@front-end.social avatar

whhhhyyy are devs still using Sass? You can do everything in plain CSS now. Seems like a waste of brain space to spend time learning it at this point :/

@xgebi i still havent really understood the point of it tbh - when i look at examples it seems basically the same but you're maybe saving one word of typing but not using the parent selector?

I have this delicious recipe for molasses cookies, but it calls for some weirdly precise measurements. Chief among them: “38 grams or about 3/4 egg”

So I finally weighed an egg and scaled up the recipe. And the new measurements include precisely 300g flour, exactly 1 stick of butter, and 1/2 tsp of each spice.

…and I realize the person who posted this recipe originally had a completely normal recipe, but went through a ton of effort in order to yield exactly 24 cookies in a batch 🤔

amber,
@amber@front-end.social avatar

@keithjgrant I need know exactly how you get 3/4 of an egg??? is that 100% yolk and a quarter white? 50% yolk and 50% white? just white?
