Funny how writing a blog post using your own package leads you to finding more friction points and eliminating them in the package. Similar to but not the same as writing whole new functions for the package. #RStats

@adamhsparks@rstats.me avatar

@Drmowinckels, Indeed!!! Thankfully these aren't bugs, just minor friction points that could be made smoother for the user experience!

adamhsparks,
@adamhsparks@rstats.me avatar

@Drmowinckels that said, I did just find a real bug. 😅

Well this is fun. I started using Raivo for my 2FA some time ago to get away from Authy as a FOSS alternative. Unbeknownst to me a company bought it and has enshittified it so much that it's now not even usable!

https://github.com/raivo-otp/ios-application/issues/319

"We are aware of the issue and we are working on it with no sleep", I don't care about your sleep. You pushed something out that' was so broken it should have never made it to TestFlight!

Both my devices autoupdated today. Lucky me. 😬

adamhsparks,
@adamhsparks@rstats.me avatar

Here's an article that explains why I missed the "announcement" that Ravio was sold. It was on Xitter only apparently. 🙄

https://www.ghacks.net/2023/12/19/psa-raivo-otp-for-ios-was-acquired-by-mobime-a-few-months-ago/

Now if I can ever get my codes back, I can migrate to something else.

Don't be like me learning the hard way. Keep backups of your 2FA details folks!

adamhsparks,
@adamhsparks@rstats.me avatar

It’s fixed. But a formerly FOSS application now requires you to pay to export your 2FA details. That was the whole reason that I painfully migrated to a recommended app, Raivo, that didn’t lock you in! I’ve got screenshots of my QR codes and should be able to migrate with those, but still. A pox upon the house of tijme for selling out the users of this formerly great app. https://github.com/raivo-otp/marketing-website/issues/19

adamhsparks,
@adamhsparks@rstats.me avatar

Reading that thread, I see that I misunderstood. Sadly, it never was FOSS.

@lwpembleton Bitwarden is the strongest contender right now.

adamhsparks,
@adamhsparks@rstats.me avatar

@danwwilson @lwpembleton they have 2FA as well?

adamhsparks,
@adamhsparks@rstats.me avatar

@danwwilson @lwpembleton yes, I mean OTP. I’ve been using Bitwarden for password management for years now. Just need an authenticator now as well

adamhsparks,
@adamhsparks@rstats.me avatar

@Mehrad @danwwilson @lwpembleton though I still need something for my TOTP for my Bitwarden or Protonpass. So. I guess I’ll just stick with a dedicated app. Ente auth is being recommended. I’ll give it a go.

adamhsparks,
@adamhsparks@rstats.me avatar

@danwwilson @Mehrad @lwpembleton that came up as well but the whole NFT thing turned me right off. 😬

adamhsparks,
@adamhsparks@rstats.me avatar
adamhsparks,
@adamhsparks@rstats.me avatar

@lwpembleton @danwwilson @Mehrad it IS GPL3 tho. So maybe?

adamhsparks,
@adamhsparks@rstats.me avatar

@lwpembleton @danwwilson @Mehrad so I spent some more time reading, and https://www.privacyguides.org/en/tools/ recommends Ente but not 2FAS. That's reasonable enough for me, for now.

adamhsparks,
@adamhsparks@rstats.me avatar

@Mehrad @lwpembleton @danwwilson, OK, you seem to be rather negative on this one. What's your suggestion here? I mean, I've looked high and low and can't seem to find anything better by my definition and it's recommended by a site that I find trustworthy. What are you using?

I'm not saying you're wrong, but I'm curious as to what you see as being the solution here.

adamhsparks,
@adamhsparks@rstats.me avatar

@Mehrad @lwpembleton @danwwilson all good. I suspected you were trying to be helpful, hence my last sentence.

I feel much the same as you do about this. A hardware key is looking more and more attractive, TBH.

Aside from the "ick" factor of the NFT, 2fas meets most of those criteria. But if you sync with the cloud it lacks encryption. Hence, privacyguides not recommending it.

This just sucks.

One of these days I'll learn that you can check some things locally before pushing so that you don't waste so much time and resources with GitHub Actions failing and trying again after "fixing". Today is not that day.

Also, possibly related, I hate YAML.

I can't reach https://openstreetmap.org/ with my home Internet (NBN) connection. But I can if I tether my phone and use my 5G connection. I've, i) turned off the PiHoles, ii) Rebooted the router, iii) Changed the DNS Servers on the router and iv) tried multiple devices but just cannot reach this URL on my home network. A traceroute returns an "unknown host".

Anyone have any ideas on this?

adamhsparks,
@adamhsparks@rstats.me avatar

I was using an API from there over the weekend but since yesterday I can't reach it now. Puzzling.

@hrbrmstr @hrbrmstr, thanks, I can ping all three with no packet loss.

All three respond the same to the curl command.

I've just added the R programming language to Fedidevs! You can now find 194 #Rstats programmers on fedidevs!

Thank you @smach for the suggestion! 💙

adamhsparks,
@adamhsparks@rstats.me avatar

@TimTeaFan @anze3db @smach I'm puzzled as well, as far as I can tell, I'm fully discoverable here, but I'm not on the list along with oodles of other #RStats folks that I follow. Several of us are on the RStats.me instance, even.

But I did find a few new profiles to follow, so that's at least working for me!

adamhsparks,
@adamhsparks@rstats.me avatar

@TimTeaFan @anze3db @smach, nevermind, I scrolled down farther in the FAQ and see that rstats.me isn't indexed, so that explains it.
