My photo, spotted in Amsterdam today. A little something lost in translation.

Yep: I was engaging with someone via Facebook this week who just can't grasp the point. Once I had the realization, I just dropped out of the conversation. It was SO freeing!

The latest news: we are now at sea ...but not quite on our ship yet. No, not confusing, it's just Blog Post #3.

The eclipse a few minutes ago, as seen from Las Vegas. You don't need to build a pinhole camera. Just go look for shadows of trees and bushes on a flat surface, such as the pavement or a wall. Or smooth dirt. Or your hand. It's VERY easy to see without glasses, and without endangering your eyes by looking at the sun.

When we were kids and "our" magazines wrote about stuff, we laughed. The problem is, a lot of it was true ...and still is. This really is from MAD, from the September 1969 issue. Yoiks!

Gannett recently revamped its comic strip selections, and female creators were nearly all wiped out. Readers LOVE comics, so this is another example of newspapers shooting themselves in the foot.

“There are more dead men than living women in the funny pages,” says Georgia Dunn of “Breaking Cat News”. More at the Washington Post (gift link, so you don’t have to have a subscription): https://wapo.st/48Wd9ki

“While Big Tech sites like Spotify claim they’re ‘democratizing’ culture, they instead demand artists engage in double the labor to make a fraction of what they would have made under the old model. ... Under the tyranny of algorithmic media distribution, artists, authors — anyone whose work concerns itself with what it means to be human — now have to be entrepreneurs, too.” Bingo. The struggle is real: I’ve been living it for 30 years now, and it’s VERY hard. At Vox.

Headline: Convicted Computer Hacker Kevin Mitnick dead at 59 from pancreatic cancer.

I had never met him, but we knew someone in common who is VERY well known who gave me Mitnick’s metal business card (clever design: it’s a lockpicking set).

I just put it on eBay since I’m guessing someone will enjoy having it.
