#Inkscape is really not too happy when I try to embed 90 MB of images. Possibly I should use linking, instead. 🤔

I always say I need to write it down, but everytime I cook aloo gobi, I watch Gurindar Chadha's little cooking video on the "Bend It Like Beckham" DVD. It's becoming a tradition.

Unfortunately, I'm missing some of the ingredients. Turmeric?! How am I out of turmeric? We had so much! So I'm just using curry powder w/ turmeric in it. Also fresh cilantro/coriander. How did I forget that? So, dry coriander seeds, I guess.

Well.
The 88x31 buttons are very cool and nostalgic, but I think I have to try out this hexagon thing:

I discovered a site today that has collected 29K of those 88x31 GIF buttons that used to be so common on the web. No useful order (they're alphabetical, and the names are from the sites they were scraped from):

Wow. A website just asked me if I were between 13 and 15 years old.

What's that about, I wonder?

I mean, the implication is that the content is okay if you're < 12 or > 15..? 🤔

This whole time there was a native Linux desktop GUI Seafile client..?

I guess I never looked for it. Just kept using the web interface. Which was quite tedious because there was no range-select. I had to just sit there and tick each little box or else select all of them.

Of course, now my android Seafile client has stopped working. Some kind of cosmic balance, perhaps?

Yeah. This pretty much sums up the ending of most Urusei Yatsura stories.

Now to see if I can make any decent wallpaper from all these screencaps.

The US commercial medical system is absolutely disgusting and borderline criminal. :dumpsterfire:

I mean, it's actually routine for a provider to tell you that a procedure or equipment item will cost $X, but then when you actually see a bill it's 5-10X.

And they just expect you to pay it.

They'll give you the runaround for days. The person who promised you won't remember the promise and insists it's not their department. And billing stonewalls.

It's not medicine.
It's a con game.

My feed has had a lot of commentary on Microsoft's upcoming "Recall" feature, which is apparently an AI-enhanced screenlogging tool.

Some of this is entirely justified distrust of Microsoft (or any proprietary software company), while some is dismissing the value of screenlogging entirely.

I've been screenlogging on Linux with FFMPEG and Kdenlive for over 5 years, so I have some thoughts that might be a little more nuanced.

So I wrote that up for you:

Probably, though, the enthusiasm for decorating the laptop has its roots in procrastination against using it for what I planned to do with it.

Troubling.
Why am I afraid?

Probably because to proceed is to embrace hope, and hope is frightening because it can fail.

It's easier to wallow in despair, grumbling about might-have-beens, instead of taking chances on make-it-sos.

"Don't you know it's already too late?" says my demon.

The subconscious can be wiley.

I FINALLY fixed that old T-410 laptop. New screen. New cooling fan. It's working fine.

And you know what this means, right?

That's right: I am OBSESSED with getting stickers for it.... :raccoon_cool:

In "Unimatrix Zero", Part II, we clearly see the Delta Flyer explode. But then they're using it in the very next episode, "Imperfection". 🤔

Perhaps the title refers to the state of continuity in "Star Trek: Voyager"..? 😅

Wow. Just cleaned out the spam, phish, scams, etc from one of the email addresses I rarely check.

A.k.a. a "wretched hive of scum and villainy".

Email scams are gross.

Finished another of the : "Stand on Zanzibar" by John Brunner.

Hmm. 🤔
Still not sure what I make of this one. Overpopulation. Eugenics. Artificial Intelligence. Sexism. Racism. Crime.

For 1969, it is a very forward-looking book, but still feels "of its time". I kept visualizing the main characters as character actors of that time (though I can't remember the names).

If I need to collect e-forms from people with confidential information on them, what's the best/responsible way to do it?

Is there an easy way to use for this?
Should they just email the forms? (But that's not encrypted, right?)

I have a fillable PDF form set up, but it's going to have legal names and bank accounts, etc. I need to keep that private.

Surely there is some standard practice for this kind of thing? 🤔

Well, I'm starting to tame the Fillable Forms workflow in LibreOffice after watching this nice intro by Melissa Compton.

I have found a bug, though. Sometimes trying to adjust the position of a form element causes LibreWriter to crash. Not sure what exactly is triggering it. Something to do with table cells, though.

The Nextcloud package defaults to providing a "Photos" app that collects ALL of the photos on the site into one ginormous gallery.

There are PNG streams in this collection. :welp:

I could hear the server fans spinning up as it tried to preview literally 10s of thousands of images...

So, I guess I'll just disable that app...

Maybe it's going to work out. Maybe not.

But today, Nextcloud is really pissing me off. :dumpsterfire:

Slow.
Latency from hell.
Insane symlink behavior.

Honestly, if you can't beat rsync with your snazzy new code, you should just write a web front-end for rsync and be done with it.

Hmmm.... :leftsharkdance:

TerryHancock, to random

Huh. Well, there's another weirdness for today:

The "host" command on AV Linux no longer respects /etc/hosts.

I looked this up on Stack Exchange, and see self-satisfied responses claiming it was always this way.

No. It absolutely was not!

I used this a LOT, so I know. For me, this behavior changed last week when I switched from Ubuntu Studio to AV Linux.

The simple answer is probably that Debian was including a different "host" command (or alias?).

Just saw a popular meme repeated that essentially reduces to this: "you can recognize true history because it makes you feel bad. If it makes you feel good, it must be false."

Yeah, that's "confirmation bias" + pessimism. It's nonsense.

True history will make you feel all kinds of ways, because "good" and "bad" have been happening all along. Plus, half the time, it's not clear which is which.

Pessimism is NOT realism.

Background art for "Star Trek: Lower Decks". These make really nice desktop wallpaper (or Zoom backgrounds, as the page suggests). One of the things I lost with my home directory, so I had to search for it again:
