Did an 'Open Browser tabs' poll for over the weekend

63 people replied. Final results:

38% - 0 - 20
17% - 21 -60
17% - 61 -100
27% I stopped counting many moons ago

I''m mildly surprised 'cause I assumed that - to over generalise - ADHD peeps would have mostly been in the 'I stopped counting category' but it seems like Autistic peeps don't like lots of tabs?

I guess AuDHD people are.. erm on their own special island?

I'm firmly in the 'stopped countin' group 🤷‍♀️

SilverGM,

@Faintdreams One possibility is that your bar for 'lots of tabs' is unusually high; I'd consider anything over 10 tabs to be a lot. There might also be differences in tab management, I pretty much always close tabs when I'm not using them.

SilverGM, to Genesys

One use I have noticed for generic systems like #Genesys and #CypherSystem is when they can be modded to fit more specific settings, the #DresdenFiles #ttrpg does this pretty well with #FATE. It's not as good as a ground-up, dedicated system, but it can be more accessible for someone who wants to do something unique.

These days, I've developed something of an appreciation for really campy/cartoony media, things with clear heroes and villains and happy endings. I get that it doesn't work for every story, but with the constant misery in both today's world and media, I find things like that to be deeply refreshing.

To quote the 2+ small children neighbouring me: "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
...
...
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA"

I've noticed a lot of modern media makes the villain sympathetic by having them do the wrong things for the right reasons, which is a valid approach, but:

  • If poorly done, you can inadvertently attack whichever moral drives the villain
  • There are other ways of making villains sympathetic
  • You don't always have to make a villain sympathetic
As always, you have to take the right approach for the story you're telling.
(Edit: I got 'right' and 'wrong' mixed around, fixed now, feeling dumb)
SilverGM,

@RogerBW ... I made the mother of all typos, and I only just noticed. I meant 'doing the wrong things for the right reasons', and I was arguing that there are other was of doing things.
Bloody hell, how did I miss that!?

To all the #VideoGame women I've loved before: A thread.

kyonshi, to DnD
@kyonshi@dice.camp avatar

I have been playing Middle-Earth: Shadow of War the last few days, which is not a bad game, even if it seems lacking in comparison to Shadow of Mordor.

But it made me think about Sauron in #dnd again, that is, #odnd: he's basically a lich, isn't he? Powerful spellcaster, sort of undead, has an item that contains part of his power and... actually we don't really know so much about him from LOTR, he shows up like once when he gazes through the palantir.

#tolkien #ttrpg

SilverGM,

@kyonshi There are two major problems with comparing Gandalf's abilities to DnD classes

  1. Tolkien magic is much more subtle than DnD magic, and works on different rules and scales; DnD isn't good for modeling Sauron's curse on Gondor's morale or spell duels from across continents.
  2. Gandalf spends most of the trilogy on 'silent running', avoiding using his magic as it's easy to detect, and his role was more of a guide anyway.
The comparison may be entertaining, but isn't meaningful.

Every time I see a small child, I'm increasingly convinced that the solution to the #FermiParadox is that all civilizations wipe themselves out after developing contraceptives.

SilverGM, to VideoGames

Rationally, I know there's nothing wrong with wanting to play an evil character in or , but every time I hear about someone else's evil playthrough/campaign, there's always a small part of me going "You don't want to help all the people!? 😭😭"

So - it seems like there are quite a few adults in their late 20's (and 30's and 40's) now who are getting medical and/or self diagnosis as having ADHD and/or Autism ...

And finding out that they were diagnosed as young children - but for various reasons their Parents didn't tell them.

A: tHis is wiiiiiLD. And also

B: Am now side eyeing various things about my family..

SilverGM,

@Faintdreams After I was diagnosed, my parents mentioned that they'd suspected since primary school, but the psych they talked to at the time told them to not test me because "They shouldn't give me any doubts". Idiot.

I really want to get more in to #CRPGs, but 9/10 of them are either

  • Real dark (Shadowrun Returns, Pathfinder: Wrath Of The Righteous, Tyranny)
  • Originated in the 90s, and their first games are better left there. (Baldur's Gate, Divine Divinity, The Elder Scrolls)

Reading up on . One of the big authors is literally named John Wick, and I do a double-take every time I see the name.

I enjoy writing, but I hated English class. I've been thinking about reasons for that, and one of them is some of the god-awful "classics" we had to read. The worst offender was "We All Fall Down" by Robert Cormier.
"Behold, two teenagers whose lives suck! Watch as their lives continue to suck and they can't or won't do a damn thing about it! Also, there's a serial killer revealed in a dumb-ass plot twist. A central message? People are assholes and no-one's going to change that."
Ugh.
