Brief thoughts on fascism and political prisoners, ft. Trump and Gramsci 🧵

The false-narratives that are being spun globally by the far-right to make themselves look like political victims were predictable but are still dangerous and terrifying.

This statement from one of the current Italian Deputy PMs Matteo Salvini strikes me as in complete contradiction to historical reality – the reality of how the Italian Fascists falsely imprisoned and killed their opponents.

I've just popped the recipe for my Pistachio and Pomegranate Blondies up on my website. It's the first non-pie-related recipe there, but I think it holds its own 😂

White chocolate blondies with a pistachio cream, chopped pistachios and pomegranate seeds.

Giving these stitch holder cords a go to fit-check this sweater.

They're hollow tubes which you push your needle tip into the end of and then slide your stitches onto - faster than spare yarn and supposedly more secure than keeping stitches on needles. I did lose about 20 stitches during transfer so not sure about that, although I think I have the knack now? Anyway, they sort of worked and will also do as more substantial stitch-holders, so for £3 I'm quite happy!

@knitting

A small semi-transparent packet containing some wound-up pieces of plastic tubes, a bit like string. The text on the packet says: 'PetiteKnit Put your stitches on hold 5 pcs 3 x 2 mm // 1 m 2 x 2 mm // 1.5 m'

Good news that ScotGov is to declare a housing crisis. Communities are being squeezed by second homes, short term lets and unequal land ownership.

However it is bizarre that reserve powers will be blamed. So many competences in this area are devolved, eg equipping councils to ensure planning oversight of property usage, introducing a land value tax and so forth.

Such a paucity of imagination and ambition.

@simonvarwell We've been trying to buy a house for three years (JFC). No doubt in my mind that 100% of the problems we had for the first 18 months could have been solved by councils preventing second homes and AirB&Bs. Even since then it's been waiting for the market to settle a bit after the second-home covid boom, twinned with the fact that all the places we want to move (roughly the areas we're from) are outrageously expensive owing to....you guessed it, second homes and holiday lets!

@simonvarwell Aw thank you, didn't mean this to come across as quite such a trauma dump though, sorry - more to say through example I agree with your assessment that ScotGov blaming Westminster for this situation is ridiculous (but very convenient for the SNP's landlord contingent)

RuthSalter,

@simonvarwell Yeah, IMO the incoherence within the SNP has become increasingly obvious as the unifying force of the independence campaign has dissipated - showing the large swathes of nats invested in the same systems of wealth as anybody else. I always have hopes for the Greens, but I struggle to seperate Scottish Labour from Keith; wish they would just leave rUK Labour and try to develop a progressive indy party (oh wait, like the Greens). Long and short, no idea who to vote for now eh 😅

RuthSalter,

@simonvarwell Oh yeah I definitely would vote Green if I thought they could actually win here. But we've been quite a swinging seat recently and I think it'll basically come down to having to support whoever keeps the Tories out.
