@JustChapman @histodons there used to be a fantastic street mural in Queens with lots of these Schoolhouse Rock characters. Building got knocked down and is now being turned into yet another luxury condo. sigh

When they were called before the House Un-American Activities Committee, athletes Jackie Robinson and Paul Robeson were compelled to advocate for the loyalty, value, and patriotism of Black Americans to a predominantly white society riddled with pervasive racial prejudice. As symbolic representatives for the entire Black community, they bore a burden heavy with expectations and public scrutiny.

Thinking today about Rep. Adam Clayton Powell Jr., New York's first Black congressman (elected 1948.) His grandparents had been enslaved. In Congress, Powell proposed amendments prohibiting federal funding of any activity that racially discriminated. For years, his "Powell amendment" was purely symbolic--it never passed . . . Enemies accused him of grandstanding. In 1964, the Powell Amendment became Title VI of the Civil Rights Act. #persist #prevail #equality #justice #Juneteenth #NamingGotham
