I took some similar photos on Monday, but the foxtail lilies have progressed through the week, so here is an updated view.

The forecast is for rain tomorrow, so I went out this evening after work to see how the gardens are doing. Some of the interesting sights are the very first purple coneflower of the year, a spotted bellflower, a nice group of woolly speedwell, and a golden bellflower.

After avoiding this garden for a couple days due to all the creepy cicadas, I really enjoyed coming out and seeing the foxtail lilies. This is their first year blooming - last year we were wondering if they had all failed. The foliage was probably just hard to find in this very dense garden.

The photo on the left is a view of a small section of this very dense garden. The foxtail lilies shoot up to the right of the three gazing balls. The bright blue sky helps the shape of the lilies stand out . The photo on the right is a close up of a yellow foxtail lily that is starting to bloom. They bloom from the bottom up.

Although it feels like it's going to storm later, it's a nice day here and so much is blooming.

We have 3 of these trellis along the side of the garage. Each has hosta below and a clematis climbing it. The white isn't blooming yet, the bright purple has only one flower after the storms we had the last couple of days. The wine-purple is blooming for the first time this year. It struggled to establish for the last 2 years.

The cicadas have arrived (West suburbs of Chicago). They seem particularly fond of the native plants such as cup plant. Although they are throughout the garden, it's nothing like the pictures I've seen with thousands all over.
@gardening

Zoom in. Lots of cicadas on the greenery from bearded iris and day lilies.

Yesterday was our garden club's plant sale. We have held this event every year for 25 years (other than during COVID). It's a totally crazy thing as nearly all the plants come from our members' gardens. We pot up plants they donate (usually as they are splitting them for maintenance) throughout April and a few members grow from seed (mostly tomatoes and peppers). These photos are from just before opening including the line up of customers. 🙂
#gardening @gardening

Inside the big tent right before the sale started. The tent is full of perennials, mostly in gallon pots. The average price is usually $6.
Outside the tent in the veggie area. This is mostly tomatoes and peppers. We had around 600 tomatoes with over 30 varieties - both heirloom and hybrid. We had around 450 peppers with 28 varieties from sweet to hot to ridiculously hot.
The only annuals at the sale are out front of the tent. These come to us as tiny plugs donated by a public garden in the area (their leftovers). Our members pot them up and one of them takes care of them in a couple pop-up greenhouses until the sale.

Spring has sprung all over our yard! This area under a giant Linden tree has only been planted for a couple years, but it is really starting to look good.

The tulips didn't bloom at all last year but have spread into larger clumps and are blooming beautifully.

@ScruffyJunco @gardening Brunnera - I think the variety may be Queen of Hearts.... It is blooming a little early but that may be because it is in a very protected spot up against the house.

Saw the first bees of the spring today. I don't think I've ever seen bees in February before, but it was 60F here and the species crocus were in full bloom.

First sign of spring here in #chicagoland . We're having unseasonably warm weather this week, so I suspect real spring is still a ways off.

@oceaniceternity @gardening yes, they were already peeking out of the ground last week as the snow melted and are now coming into bloom. It's always wonderful to see them appear and know that spring will eventually be here.

The last of the shrub rose blooms. Very thorny, but brought a few in last night before our first hard freeze. Very strong scent - the whole kitchen smells of roses.

Frost advisory tonight, so this might be the last of the #garden veggies.

Also picked a couple clusters from the shrub rose in case this finishes it for the year. (very thorny!)

@cstephens2 Cool! My husband refuses to put out Halloween decorations until October 1st. Then it's nonstop holiday decorations into January. November 1st changes from Halloween to Thanksgiving and Xmas comes out the day after Thanksgiving.

My wife needles me for getting a dog bed that's way too small for Molly, but our dog loves it. Here she is curled up in the small brown bed that I put on top of the big red bed she's supposed to use.

@stshank This seems to be a common problem. This is my father's Gordon Setter that took over the cat bed while visiting. It is much too small for her, but she loves it. Her own bed from home was about 6 feet away.

Pandamoanimum, to random

I don't like to show off about how mature and brave I am but, in this hot weather, I have been sleeping with one foot dangling outside of the bed where monsters could grab it.

PJD65,
@PJD65@mas.to avatar

@Pandamoanimum Impressive, but I attempted this a few days ago & my foot was pounced 😸 and my big toe now has puncture wounds! Clearly, this is far too dangerous in my house.

Another question for #disneyland and California theme park experts. We are going to be visiting in mid December arriving on a Saturday and departing the following Sunday. This gives us 7 full days. 5 of those are for DL since we haven't been since 2017 and want plenty of time there. We want to visit Knott's for 1 day. I'm thinking of using Monday to Friday for DL and going to Knott's either our 1st full day (Sunday) or our last (Saturday). Is this a good plan or should we change it around?

PJD65,
@PJD65@mas.to avatar

@cstephens2 Thank you! That's good to know. Maybe we should do DL on that first Sunday and be sure to do anything that is only on the weekend that day.

We've never been to Knott's so I have no idea what we are getting into there. My son (24yo) loves theme parks and wants to check it out on this trip.
