I live in Leicestershire with my wife & cat. I'm a retired Healthcare Scientist. I cycle, sketch, grow stuff on our allotment, play petanque, and twiddle with amateur radio.
Mental health is a personal & family challenge.

Instead of cleaning the shower glass & tray I had a nap this afternoon - definitely more useful!

Up and in the bath. Didn’t sleep brilliantly and I still feel a bit emotionally bleugh. Hopefully the day ahead will perk me up. Any weekend plans at your end?

MikeFromLFE,
@MikeFromLFE@cupoftea.social avatar

@purplepadma
Sorry you didn't have a great night.

I sometimes miss a soak in the bath since we swapped ours for a luxurious shower. Mrs Mike couldn't either get in or out of a bath, and I admit I was starting to struggle to get out!

For us a normal weekend is on the plans - #petanque today and #allotment tomorrow, but the weather forecast for Sunday isn't looking good.
Equally, Bank Holiday Monday we're going to see our daughter and the weather is looking poor.

Have a good day - try to chill!

I haven’t felt this bad in a couple of weeks. I really hope this is just a one off thing not the start of another period of mood instability

I hope you feel better soon.

No antipsychotic at the hospital either, they’ve ordered me some but it will take 6 days to get here. Thankfully I have 8 days supply left. Now for a cheese scone in the M&S cafe

MikeFromLFE,
@MikeFromLFE@cupoftea.social avatar

@purplepadma
My daughter is in a similar position - one of her psychoactive drugs is in short supply so she's having to take 10 lower dose tablets a day rather than 2 of the right dose. She hates taking tablets anyway.

@purplepadma@beige.party avatar

This morning is all about trying to track down some of my antipsychotic, then this afternoon my daughter and her bf arrive for a long weekend, so looking forward to seeing them. They’re cat sitting tomorrow as we’re spending the night in Cardiff. Should be good! What are you up to today?

MikeFromLFE,
@MikeFromLFE@cupoftea.social avatar

@purplepadma
Not a lot doing here.
Mrs Mike is on call for her volunteer job.
I'm idling in neutral at the moment.
The cat is oblivious to it all.

Most grown-ups on the UK won't need reminding of this -
You are not going to be voting for Sunak or Starmer (or any other leader).
You will be voting for a local constituency candidate to represent you in parliament.

Choose the person you will vote for based on what values that person represents - but you may have to compromise if your primary objective is to see the back of the tories.

Good morning. I paid for yesterday afternoon’s delicious nap with nighttime insomnia. I had to put a sleep story on to drown out the anxieties in my head. Got my first uni counselling session this afternoon, so obviously I’m now anxious about that 🙄 How are you today?

MikeFromLFE,
@MikeFromLFE@cupoftea.social avatar

@purplepadma
I often pay for day time naps with an inability to get to sleep too.

I've woken up too early again even after a good night's sleep. The sleep was probably exercise induced after playing petanque yesterday evening (there's a surprising amount of bending down, and a lot of steps to & fro)

I think I might be fighting off a cold as I've got an itchy throat and a sniffly nose.

I was hoping to get to strim the rest of the allotment today, but it might be too wet for that. I'm sure there's lots of other jobs need doing around the house.

Have a good day yourself!

There are voters out there switching from to Green Party…we’ve seen that happen at a county level in Norfolk.

has taken his rural, nature loving older core vote for granted and they are disgusted at the state of our rivers and fearful of what may come for their children with .

The writing is on the wall for Tories and they won’t vote Labour.

@JugglingWithEggs @TheSwiv
Mrs Mike occasionally mixes with a group of older ladies who aren't short of a bob or two, they live on the edge of rural & suburban Leicestershire - they seem to be intent on not voting, some for the first time.
The motivation as far as she can tell is a general disgust at politicians and politics.

I've no idea if this snapshot is in any way representative (anecdotes do not make data etc) but she sees no appetite to vote, let alone vote Green.

Came home to find Tom and our gardener had been very busy, they’d dug out a dead tree, moved one that was obscured by other plants, planted two saplings in the lawn, put a blueberry bush in the border, transplanted the olive tree to its new enormous pot and put an acer in the pot left behind.

MikeFromLFE,
@MikeFromLFE@cupoftea.social avatar

@purplepadma
That's impressive work - all I've done in the garden is to put my new battery strimmer through its paces on the edges of the grass.

MikeFromLFE,
@MikeFromLFE@cupoftea.social avatar

@purplepadma
I'm contemplating a bit of a garden makeover - our current 'look' is becoming hard to maintain as we get older, and a lot of our energy is expended on our allotment.
I fear a bit of a pushback from Mrs Mike which is why I'm hesitant.

Do you eat any foods that you actively dislike because you believe them to be good for you in some way? If so, what?

MikeFromLFE,
@MikeFromLFE@cupoftea.social avatar

@purplepadma
I can't say I do. I eat broccoli (calabrese) and sweet peppers because Mrs Mike insists they're healthy but I mildly dislike them and it's not worth falling out over. Cauliflower is going the same way!

MikeFromLFE, to random
@MikeFromLFE@cupoftea.social avatar

That's the #allotment trip done - as expected the grass was up to here. I've strimmed until the batteries were dead, so it's another visit during the week to get the rest done.
Unexpected - the sweetcorn & pea plants I put in before our holiday have gone - no sign they were ever there! No sign of the carrots or beetroot coming up either.

Still - it was an enjoyable few hours in the sun

What is your dream road trip? Where would you start? Where would you end up? What stops would you make along the way? It can be short or long, whatever interests you!

MikeFromLFE,
@MikeFromLFE@cupoftea.social avatar

@RickiTarr
We're at the stage of life where we are able to do 'road trips' but because I dislike driving long distances we do them by rail or local bus.

We had a monster 6 week trip around Europe planned & booked to start just as Covid hit. Life is such that we are now having to do it in bite size chunks.

The original plan included
Budapest, Lake Balaton, Vienna, Dresden, Leipzig, Hartz Mountains, Baltic coast of Germany & Poland plus some the Hanseatic cities.

Morning! Another very sunny day. Not sure yet what I’m going to do with it. Tom’s going to try out his new lawnmower, woooo! Might go for a walk somewhere. Any plans your end?

MikeFromLFE,
@MikeFromLFE@cupoftea.social avatar

@purplepadma
Good morning to you!

We've got to go to the #allotment - there are brassicas in our garden that need planting out, and I'm sure the grass and weeds will be thigh high there.
If Mrs Mike can get up (she's not had a restful night) then we'll take a picnic lunch and make a bit of a day out of it.

Enjoying a Life of Crime!
Ah, I love Monday evening TV which, tonight, consists of:

Brokenwood Mysteries — a police series set in New Zealand
The Vanishing Triangle — a true story of a serial killer set in Ireland
Harry Wild — a PI series also set in Ireland

I love Acorn TV for the choice of shows offered from all over the world. Which includes lots of murder-mysteries, police dramas, and all things crime. https://acorn.tv/brokenwoodmysteries

That reminds me -
We were sitting on the top of the bastion at Walmer Castle in the sun, and an American couple sat nearby (they were on an excursion from a cruise ship) - they were loudly waxing lyrical about the view of the Atlantic Ocean.
No, I didn't try to correct them.

(In Kent..... it's the English Channel, at a push it might be the North Sea, but the Atlantic is a long way away)

We've been sent a huge questionnaire from our daughter's psychologist about her childhood and we are meeting with them in a few weeks time for an in depth interview.

There's some suggestion that she may be and this has played a major role in her troubles over recent years.

I'm suspending judgement because I don't know enough about the subject and Internet research on in adult females isn't particularly helpful. I'm leaving this one to the professionals

Hmm, so the couple we went to dinner with were nice enough… they scored points with me for being cool about trans kids… but they don’t seem to like Wales, Welsh people, their nearest town or their immediate neighbours. They said they will probably return to England in 2-3 years.

My take is that they really haven’t put much effort into joining things or making friends locally. They moved into a property in an isolated hamlet, most of which is holiday homes so there’s no proper community. They thought more about the view and the number of bedrooms than whether the closest town would meet their needs.

We have been here longer, but I think we were much more settled and contented after 3 years than they are now. Just a reminder that relocating is about much more than how much house you can get for your money or being able to see green fields from your lounge window.

MikeFromLFE,
@MikeFromLFE@cupoftea.social avatar

@purplepadma
When Mrs Mike's mother died we had enough money to move house (even to somewhere really scenic) but the more we thought about it, and the more we thought about what we would need as we got older, the more we came to value shops in walking distance, a regular bus service, and having a good relationship with the GP practice.
Where we are isn't perfect but it's home.

#BritsOfMastodon if you wanted to set up a “British restaurant” abroad, to which people would go to, much like they go to an Indian or Chinese restaurant, what dishes would you include on the menu as quintessential British gastronomy?

That all sounds rather classy.
It depends on the style of restaurant - yours is the back room with linen tablecloths and sparkling glasses, the rest of us are in the bar with pint glasses and mismatched chairs!
