And today, in WTF school technology. The laptops they gave seniors at the beginning of this semester are running Windows 11, have 4 GB of RAM, a 64 GB SSD, and a 4-core seventh gen Intel I5 from 2017 or so running at 1.00 GHZ. But it gets worse! One of the restrictions they put on the new Windows images is... you can't view your battery! It's just, completely fucking gone from the system tray. And, you don't even get notified if it's running low! Suffice it to say this has pissed me off so greatly that I'm now figuring out how the Windows battery API works.

@TheQuinbox Oh dear! I try to use space sparingly, but with how space-hungry everything is, even I would feel squeezed in by just 64 GB. Windows is so bad at cleaning up after itself, with so little space you have to constantly clean temporary files, limit the number of system restores, use CCleaner, install nothing but the bare minimum ...
And hmm, I wonder if you could get around this weird battery restriction by just installing the Resource Monitor add-on for NVDA.

    Oh no. I've just made the mistake of installing a new version of Microsoft Teams and it's so much worse.
    I don't even know how they managed to make it even worse than it was, but they did! They've replaced nice buttons with checkboxes that can't even be checked except with clicking, dialogs just randomly unfocus, it gets confused if you reach the bottom of the application, and my screen reader lags. So. Damn. Much.
    I hate this shitty piece of software and I hate that I have to use it.

    How to get to YouTube comments with NVDA: go to the end of the page, hit down arrow to get the next batch of videos to show up, go back up to the top of the page, hit 1, hit h, oh they aren't there, try shift h and h a couple of times, sacrifice a chicken and they finally show up. They also infinitely scroll, so if you hit h and get to a video heading, go back and more might've loaded. This isn't NVDA's fault, it's just how bad the web is.

    @tspivey I've never felt so glad I am a privacy fanatic. Freetube is just so beautifully accessible! Press h twice to get to "Up Next", up arrow once to "Click to view comments", enter, and there they are!

    Meanwhile, on Invidious they are visible by default. Granted, finding an Invidious instance that's up can be a pain in the butt, and they do take a few seconds to load. But once they're there, they're pretty damn accessible!

    Just managed to remove more than 11 GB of data, bringing my used storage down to a nice 100. I've still got plenty of space left, but still, it's fun to do this every so often.
    Remember folks, #Windows is incredibly bad at cleaning up after itself. Go to Settings >System >Storage >Temporary Files every once in a while; there's bound to be at least 1 GB of Windows Update Cleanup trash in there.
    And of course, delete programs you don't need! And then go look at Program Files, Program Data and AppData if you've the energy, because programs can be very bad at cleaning up after themselves, too.

    @slcw I would really love to know what the thought process was here. You know, the one that lead you to the conclusion that you should not only be pointlessly ableist towards blind people rather than just saying a particular picture was bad, but that it was necessary for you to use the bloody hashtag so we'd be sure not to miss said ableist bullshit, too.

    Apparently I got reported today for using the #Alt4me tag and not being blind. I was told by multiple people on Mastodon that if I didn't have the energy to do alt text for every image I could use this tag and someone would do it for me.

    Instead I got reported to my instance owner. You all need to make up your fucking minds what is acceptable and what isn't if you want people to stay on mastodon. As it stands, I don't feel comfortable posting images anymore because if I don't have the energy to write alt text then I get shamed, if I used #Alt4Me I get reported

    You people make it so tiring that for someone like me with ADHD and Executive Dysfunction it is much easier to just not use Mastodon to post any images!!!!

    I'd also like to touch on how people always shame others with "invisible" illnesses. I cannot escape it. Just because I am sighted does not mean I am not disabled in some ways. But people can't see ADHD and executive dysfunction, so I just get their personal diagnosis of 'LAZY'.

    I can tell why artists aren't flocking here in droves.

    I don't know what I am going to do going forward but I feel pretty fucking uncomfortable posting any images to Mastodon now lest I be shamed or reported or fediblocked because someone didn't like whatever about my posts.

    @aby Yup, that's what it is! #Alt4Me can be used by absolutely everyone who just posted an immage they cannot describe for whatever reason, be it because they can't see it or writing descriptions is hard for them. To help them out, reply with a description, perhaps adding the #Alt4You hashtag.

    IMO though, ImageCaptionsPLS@a.gup.pe (which I'm not tagging so as not to spam it) is an even better way to ask for an image description. That's because the group will boost the request to anyone following it, where as hashtags don't always federate that well.

    So if you would like to help people out, follow that group and jump in when it boosts a request. :ms_smile:
