In Signal, I can send a "Note to Self".

I can also block that contact.

Do I dare?

Even at this early stage, though, Anthropic's research provides an exciting framework for making an LLM's "black box" results that much more interpretable and, potentially, controllable.

@mpesce one sort of wonders whether there are certain transformations that one could perform on the observed state vectors that transform it into for humans, normalized form, (similar to a coordinate system transformation in linear algebra) so various human concepts correspond to (0, 0, .., 1, 0, 0, …) vectors.
Insert lots of “…” quotes because I don’t think state vector etc are quite the right terms, trying to make a weak analogy here.

Pondering fake news and AI hallucinations.

Practically, there isn't really any difference, is there? Fake news might be more credible at this point, but I'm sure AIs will improve ... 😛

If "AI answers" are the future of web search -- at least that's the common wisdom these days -- then it appears search ads will turn into paid mentions as part of the AI answers.

Overt and covert strategies are possible. Like mentioning the product or vendor overtly, or not mentioning them at all, but claiming that some feature X is absolutely required (but only the paid vendor provides it).

In other words, web search will be entirely corrupted, and nobody will be able to tell how.

I just realized that arguably I started working on the social web in ~1999, not ~2005.

At Aviatis, I created this feature where our users -- who were engineers -- could share semantic objects of certain engineering diagrams shown in a browser with each other with deep context for purposes of collaboration around those objects. That's about as social as a use case as I can think of...

That was Java applets rather than HTML, but I don't think the users cared (except for the load times ...)

Back in civilization! Todays hike to the top of Mt Umunhum, from the lower parking lot. About 15-16 miles, depending which map you believe, and about 2400 vertical feet. Took me 6.5h including lunch. Happy with myself but sure glad to be sitting on the couch again. Here’s the view from the start of the trail.

J12t, to mastodon
@J12t@social.coop avatar

What would it take for #Mastodon to become that political organizing app instead of Twitter or Threads? Isn’t it a much more logical place?

Anybody trying to make it so? Any reasons that speak against?

https://restofworld.org/2024/instagram-threads-app-taiwan-protests/

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@kaffiene there is a misunderstanding here. #mastodon is not a space, safe or otherwise. It’s a piece of software. But this piece of software allows you and your community to create a space that’s safe for you according to just about any criteria you care for. It not pre made … but that’s an opportunity, not a bug imho.

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@george unfortunately. Probably. True.

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@_elena so what can we do here?

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@kaffiene then I’m baffled and if you were willing to explain, perhaps I can be unbaffled.

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@xyhhx the context of this post was that Threads is apparently used quite a bit for organizing in Taiwan. It’s not obvious to me that mastodon or other fediverse apps are any worse than Threads for that purpose, and may even be better?

@jamesmarshall @laurahelmuth Oh, excellent. Hi! 🙂

Laura, you might have seen this recent piece in DigiDay on why some publishers are investing in connecting their sites to the fediverse.

It appears this line of reasoning applies to Scientific American as well, and more so, because the Fediverse doesn't have a middle man with their own (perhaps anti-reality) agend. A publication focused on the facts will find it a better channel to their audience.

Happy to help :-)

Is ghost on here? Is there a way to beg them not to do this? Random bloggers aren't generally prepared to moderate comments on their own pages. There is no way on earth they're prepared to moderate their subscribers across the whole social web. It's a catastrophically bad idea.

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@jenniferplusplus didn’t blogging work that way 20 years ago? Anybody leave a comment on anybody’s blog? Wordpress still does it to this day? Akismet works fine?

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@jenniferplusplus I remember it differently. I remember: the best things were always the comments.

But it’s of course up to you who you let comment on your site. Perhaps nobody? Only people who you follow? Lots of choices …

I took the "shorter" route when I went a few years ago.

"There are other routes ... that lead to Mt. Whitney. They begin at less heavily-used trailheads, but require a much longer hike to reach the summit. The High Sierra Trail leaves from Giant Forest on the west side of Sequoia National Park, and is about 60 miles (100 km) one-way. It takes a minimum of 6 days (one way) or 10 days (round trip) to complete."

Met people on the trail who did that. Not for me.

What is your favorite Sausage / HOT DOG?

In some countries, sausage is a big part of the culture. It is clearly the case in Iceland and Norway, although others will likely claim to have more of an ownership to it.

But what is your favorite? I will list a few options, but I am sure you will have options I have never heard of or tried and I would like to know what I am missing!

  1. The Icelandic hot dog is a big deal and a hot dog stand is one of the more popular restaurants in Reykjavík! Typically served with ketchup, mustard, raw onion, fried, dry onions and remoulade.

  2. Norwegian hotdog. Typically served at a gas station. Similar condiments as in Iceland. Fan favorite is cheese sausage wrapped in bacon and shrimp salad.

  3. Danish sausage with bread. Instead of a hot dog, the typical Danish sausage is served with a side of short bread, ketchup and mustard.

  4. Polish sausage or Kielbase. Large sausage with plenty of taste. Side of bread and condiments.

  5. Bratwurst. Fried German sausage. Typically served with bread, ketchup and mustard on the side. A lot of variations, though, including curry wurst.

  6. English pork sausage. Often served with breakfast.

@jon Weißwurst. They even have it here in Los Altos.

Why would Google News basically randomize the order of the results in their search?

I want to know what's new in the press about the #fediverse and I have to manually scan the whole list.

Imagine two identical #social #networks with mainstream users. Same number of users, same connectedness of the social graph, same demographics etc.

Social network A only has an algorithmic feed. Social network B only has a chronological people-I-follow feed.

What would the usage numbers look like in comparison? Numbers of posts, numbers of likes/replies/boosts, growth trajectory, etc?

I would expect somebody has done some research on this. Anybody know of any public results?

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@danlyke My thesis is that I'd prefer to run a different app in the evening lazing on the couch, for mild entertainment, compared to the daytime app where I, say, want to engage in this conversation that we are having right now. "Another interchangeable app" clearly would be too many.
