Webengines are not more complex than a full OS, and yet, Linux works as a community driven project and Chromium does not.
The difference is that Linus is the one with final say in Linux, and he never sold out to a company. Chromium is Google.
It will never be a “community” project, because Google pumps so many resources into it. The goal is obvious: to make sure that it’s always ahead of any competitors, and anyone willing to catch up would have to match Google spending.
The brilliant move here by Google was making it open source. This ensures that no other megacorp needs to fight them, as long as their interests are aligned.
Edge has died already. Safari will follow. The future is grim.
A New York-bound Virgin Atlantic flight was canceled just moments before takeoff last week when an alarmed passenger said he spotted several screws missing from the plane’s wing.
By the replies, I almost assumed this was 4-chan. It’s either some bold bravado, or generic out of touch shaming people foe allowing kernel level access.
There are interesting conversations to be had around this topic. For example, Riot in the article rises the following points, can we address those?
Cheat software developers are already releasing cheats that operate at this level. If Riot wants to combat them, it has to do so at the kernel level.
Lots of other companies are already using similar software to prevent cheating.
“This isn’t giving us any surveillance capability we didn’t already have.” Claiming that if they wanted to steal data, their example being a secret recipe, then they could already do so in user mode.
and what is their endgame? “Developers are releasing cheats that emualate a mouse. Therefore Riot needs to use a camera to record your hand”?
You mean a device that physically operates the mouse? I don’t know, I don’t work for riot, but this is done in online chess - to participate in some tournaments with money prizes you need 2 webcams.
If everybody is jumping off a roof, so should Riot?
No, the question is if this discussion also cover all other anticheats that use kernel mode, or is here anything that is League-specific?
Isn’t the whole point of anti-cheat to survey the computer? If you aren’t getting anything new, then why even use a kernel-level anticheat?
This is just splitting hairs on semantics, isn’t it? From the moment the app is running in user space, it could collect a huge amount of user info, but it can’t look for kernel-level cheat software.
Note that I don’t play league, I could care less about the game or the developer, I’m just interested in the privacy vs cheating aspect of the conversation.
The kernel-level cheats would fall into this category I guess, but cheaters will still be running them. Could anything without the same level access identify them?
“Bluey” is a children’s show that features a young Blue Heeler Pup named, Well Bluey exactly. She was the show’s main protagonist and is 6 years old. She can get kind off mischievous and adventures, and she lived in Brisbane, Australia with her sister “Bingo” who is 4 years old and just like Bluey, she can be so mischievous and she has an orange colour on her skin and had her own episode in Season 2. Then we have Bandit (Bluey’s Father), who was voiced by David McCormack.
He is sometimes funny but dominant towards his kids. And lastly we have Chilli (Bluey’s Mother), who is voiced by Melanie Zanetti. She cares so much about her kids and sometimes hangs out with Bandit.
The show aired on the 1st October 2018 and has gained more episodes to this day.
One day in November 2019, I decided to go to the ABC Shop in Macquarie Shopping Centre with my mother. We were gonna buy our first Bluey DVD and we were gonna watch it in our bed. I called my Cousin and told her that we got a Bluey DVD. She was so delighted and told me that she loved that show so much. When we got home we started watching the full season.
We started off with The Magic Xylophone (The very first episode of the show). We watched it all night long until we arrived at Season 2. I got excited and texted my Cousin saying that we were finally at the second season of Bluey, and she was very excited too. She said that the last episode was called “Sleepytime”. I was so overjoyed and so was my mother.
As we reached the last episode, the intro looks normal. I exited the episode and checked to see if we missed one episode - and we did.
The title reads “Grief and Loss”.
“What?” I thought to myself. “I thought the episode was called Sleepytime!” said my mother. “Yes, I know.” I said. “But I think we missed one??”, said my mother. We continued watching the episode. It started with The Heeler’s House at day time as some birds flew passed, We then cut to Bluey crying in the living room while playing with her toys. “What the?” I said with total confusion. Bandit comes in and asks if she was feeling good. “No” said Bluey, "I’m not. “Why did Bingo have to leave us so soon?”
Me and my mother were shocked and confused. “Wait, Bingo left?” I thought. “That sounds so sad!” said my mother. Bandit hugs Bluey. “I know Bluey, It pains us so much” He said. “But at least she is in heaven”. Me and my mother were horrified. Bingo died? We never expected Bingo to die! “Chili, please” says Bandit. “Don’t start grieving!” “I’m not grieving?” Chili stuttered. “I loved her so much” “Us too” Says Bluey and Bandit. A flashback shows The Heeler family in the hospital with Bingo. She was all pale as if she had cancer. “Bingo! I love you so much!” Said Bluey. and Bingo replies weakly: “I love you too, Bluey”. Then, she stopped breathing. Bluey and her parents started sobbing softly.
The flashback ended, and the next scene showed Bluey sleeping in her bed with tears in her eyes. She opened her eyes and looked at Bingo’s bed. Then she sighs softly, and goes back to sleep. It then fades to Bluey’s dream where she is seen sleeping until the roof of the house opened, she then looked at the roof, revealing a light blue sky with lots of clouds with Bingo’s ghost waving at Bluey while smiling happily. That was the last scene of the episode. The credits rolled with Bingo’s ghost waving at us from before while smiling happily against a light blue sky with lots of clouds.
My mother and I were deeply emotional and even we started crying. The next day, I looked up the Bluey episode, Grief and Loss on Google, but nothing came on. Meanwhile, My Mother phoned up David McCormack and asked him if someone have created the episode, Grief and Loss. However he said that they wouldn’t dare kill off one of the main characters on their show. Then I called my Cousin and told her about the episode. She got concerned and assumed that might have been just a prank but I told her it wasn’t. Me and my mother were deeply concerned about this episode. I had nightmares about that episode.
I could not stop thinking about it to this day, and it will probably never ever EVER end.
If you have to rile the audience to be funny, you’re not funny.
But there is a “gray option” here. I read this as “you can rile up the audience and be funny, just not if that’s the only thing you do”, in context with the previous point that this sort of humour is overused and loosing its impact.
While not particularly about consequences of decisions, I highly recommend Frostpunk. It always feels like any decision is about trying to choose the less horrible one, but without ever knowing if it will work out or not. The atmosphere of that game is just superb.
Trying to desperately survive in a world that’s upside down, fighting the hopelessness and trying to survive just one more day and slowly realising the you’re just one day closer to death…
Man, it’s a really great game, but I can’t play it again anytime soon.
I saw this post and wanted to ask the opposite. What are some items that really aren’t worth paying the expensive version for? Preferably more extreme or unexpected examples.
This is true, specs between different versions are different.
That said, it’s definitely NOT a reason to buy expensive. I can find 1.3 HDMI cables being sold right now at over twice the price of a legit 2.1 cable…
There’s strong statistical evidence suggesting that millennials are, on average, older than gen z’ers. It not clear from the latest studies what could have caused this presumed age gap.
Those same studies also evidenced the startling fact that the tested individuals shared over 99.9% of their genome and could in fact belong to the same species, which is what prompted all the recent controversy after one of the lead researchers said in a televised interview that “they’re all people”.
I still couldn’t come up with a way to make it work using a resistor-capacitor circuit, but I did learn a lot (that particular rabbit hole led to me an article discussing capacitance in potato tubers…!).
There is probably a better way of solving it, but at least I got it working with another transistor to “decouple” that sensitive pin from the base. I’m not exactly sure why there’s a negative voltage across base and emitter, but it was preventing boot.
I’d be very interested in hearing any criticism you would be willing to share. I have hopes of moving this from my breadboard and solder it to a PCB so I can put it into a paper-cut lightbox that will be controllable from HomeAssistant, but I wouldn’t want to risk setting anything on fire…
One thing that concerns me is that 7333A. I only have it in a TO-92 package, and while it’s only powering the ESP-01S, which doesn’t really draw that much current, it still gets uncomfortably hot to touch (I can hold it for a few seconds, but not much longer). Is there a better alternative, or is it supposed to get hot?
Thank you!
[edit: updated the circuit, I had misplace a resistor]
