In case you were wondering why high school has made me lose all faith in society, I was walking in the hall, and passed someone who at the very least sounded female, and they said "Well I mean like, if you're a girl, and you don’t have big tits, how can anyone find you attractive?"

BTyson,

@TheQuinbox Oh my god are you serious? I hate that to a lot of people all they look at are looks. Come on. Can't we focus on overall personality?

Shoutout to the NWS for maintaining a text-only forecast. I'm not sure if they're on here but I love that they have this.

At some point during the Super Bowl, there was a Doordash ad containing an extremely long promo code and it had to be entered correctly on a website. The total cost of all the prizes that the winner gets equates to $480000 in prizes. There's a whole list of what items are included, but there's a lot of food (for example 1000 Popeyes chicken wings), lots of Mountain Dew Baja Blast, at least 4 vehicles, etc. And I surely hope that whoever wins this thing is going to use it to help people who may be struggling. I know there's nothing I can do about it with regards to what people do when they win it but I sincerely hope that people will use it to help people who could use some of this stuff. Sure, chicken wings may not be the most healthy thing in the world, but man, having chicken wings to be able to provide to somebody, that could really help them at least have something to eat. Because sometimes it doesn't matter what it is. I just really hope that whoever gets this will be responsible with it and use it to help somebody in a tough situation.

My ram usage is suddenly around 99%. I'm running a massive job with a whole lot of output, but I'm doing so on a remote server through SSH. The output updates lines as things happen, it doesn't dump thousands of lines to the terminal. I'd open Task Manager, but last time I did that, I lost NVDA. When I restarted NVDA, I found out that Task Manager was not responding, so I couldn't see what's eating my ram. Have I mentioned how much I dislike Windows 11?

BTyson,

@alexhall That's really weird. I haven't seen Task Manager go not responding on Windows 11. Could it possibly be something correlated with the task running in the terminal? I know that probably sounds weird but that's honestly the only thing I can think of. Also, was this machine upgraded from 10 or was this a clean install of 11?

BTyson,

@TheQuinbox @alexhall I'll be really curious if it still happens in Windows 11 24H2. At this point, I'll probably take another look at 11 again once 24H2 is in the beta channel before it goes to retail.

In the spirit of @NoiseBox I hereby present to you a complete audio recording of tonight's Super Bowl, before it has even happened…except, of course, that this recording is anything but.

BTyson,

@jaybird110127 @NoiseBox Was that done with a BNS?

BTyson, to random

Warning, if you currently use WordPad, you will want to back it up before upgrading to Windows 11, version 24H2. Windows 11, version 24H2 will very possibly be a build in the 26000 range.

I've seen poles on here with more than 4 choices. Does anyone know how to create these?

BTyson,

@TheQuinbox Ah. So is it not a matter of being able to press the "Add pole" button multiple times?

BTyson,

@TheQuinbox I just tried that, and I think you might be right, as pressing the "Add Pole" button again just removed it.

Has the new Discord mobile interface rolled out to everybody yet?

BTyson,

@TheQuinbox In the old Discord settings UI that was part of the old interface, there was a way to clear your Discord cache I think, and I can't find that in the new interface.

Some of the URL's of these Mastodon instances are crazy.

Random #windows tip -

If you restart your PC using the command "shutdown -t 0 -g", it will reopen the apps you had open before the reboot (the ones that support it at least)

BTyson,

@JenMsft I wonder why apps specifically have to support this?

FreakyFwoof, to TikTok

I'm such an oldschool geezer. I intensely dislike #TikTok which I label #ShitTok, youtube shorts piss me off, but my daughter's channel where she posts nothing but shorts has grown 300 subs since the beginning of the year alone. I like my longform content so I guess at some point I'll stop getting views at all, because people want videos that you can watch in less time than it takes to sneeze or scratch your bum. What a world...

BTyson,

@FreakyFwoof I much prefer text content over videos at all. For how-to instructions I've completely skipped over the videos.

BTyson,

@FreakyFwoof Is it possible maybe you format them differently or do something different with them that other how-to videos aren't doing?

I had a weird dream last night where I was trying to help @stevo399 update his iPhone as it was on iOS 15.7.9. Now, in the dream, his phone was running that even though he could get iOS 16. So we went into general, Software Update, and it kept saying he was up to date even though he was only on iOS 15. We changed a setting somewhere and then it said that iOS 16 was available, but that the download size was at least 300 gb. I think we were both so shocked by that and I was like, "Well, maybe we don't want to update."

BTyson,

@TheQuinbox @stevo399 Not quite, because this was the opposite problem. It wouldn't offer him iOS 16 initially, but then when it did it claimed it was over 300 gb.

Whoa, it's still possible to download the Windows 8.1 iso files directly from Microsoft.

I recently installed Debian 13 on a laptop of mine, and there are a lot of cool things. Being able to bind hotkeys globally, running edbrowse and speakup totally natively, some of the UI stuff is cool (like arrowing through columns in lists), etc. But I'm reminded why I don't use it. More often than not, when coming out of sleep my Orca just... doesn't Orca. So I can get to a login prompt with no speech, or a desktop with no speech. The desktop with no speech was recoverable because I did alt control f1, sudo reboot. However, I can't seem to log in without my speech for some reason. I type stuff and check the screen with lookout, but I never login, no matter what I do or where I press enter.

BTyson,

@TheQuinbox Does the issue of Orca not speaking when trying to enter your password after coming out of sleep happen every time?

BTyson,

@TheQuinbox As a workaround, I think there's a place where you can disable requiring a password on resume from sleep, but I can't remember exactly where you go to disable it, and I'm not sure if that would 100 percent resolve the issue.

BTyson,

@TheQuinbox Oof. I'm unfortunately not sure about that. Sorry about that.

I hate the idea of the government getting involved in tech, as a general rule. I've seen too many examples of that going wrong.
The EU doesn't seem to be having much success at getting Apple to loosen their restrictions on app store downloads and purchases so far. Apple is clearly obeying the letter of the law and not the spirit, which anyone should have expected.
But at this point, I think Apple has been so hostile to users and developers that legal intervention is absolutely necessary. I can't get past the idea that developers aren't even allowed to mention Apple's 30% cut without their apps being rejected. That 30% is paid by users, not developers. Apple is actively preventing users from knowing where their money goes. This should be illegal, but it's not.
I don't believe Apple has an ounce of respect for anyone who isn't Apple at this point. They are a greedy, spiteful child who will do anything to get their way, no matter how ridiculous it is. And greedy, spiteful children need to be put in their place.

Sideloaded iPhone apps will still be reviewed by Apple and the company will 'collect fees from developers' who offer apps outside of its App Store, report claims

BTyson,

@simon @patricus @bryansmart @serrebi That's really interesting, because I run into lag on a Pixel 7A running Android 13 with Talkback.

I wonder if we'll see #iOS 15.8.1, 16.7.5 and 17.3 released today.

I'm sure WASAPI has advantages, but it seems as though if you don't do things just right, then systems can't auto sleep.
