Do you think that NATO should accept new members that are currently actively at war?

I see everyoine is (rightly so) ripping on Musk's new all-male xAI effort to "understand the true nature of the universe."

But the real problem is AI can't tell us anything new beyond what scientists have already figured out. It doesn't do any "thinking" or actual research or anything new; it simply regurgitates re-formulated ideas based on the science of what we already know.

What is MIGHT produce, especially since Musk is leading this, is garbage speculation unsupported by evidence.

Snap! You nailed me, with that one ol' chap.

Guess I should stick to my day job of actually learning to use tools to do things.

I was invited by #Meta via a third party to join a roundtable about #AI fairness. There was a generous honorarium. They were asking me to sign an NDA. I said I wouldn't do it unless I could publicly declare my participation, the $ involved, and continue to criticise Meta based on public info. They ghosted me ...

I agree to that. The same with non-competes for employment.

101,525 people joined Mastodon in the past 24 hours.

To put that in context, 84,657 people joined Mastodon in the previous 6 days.

Twitter’s new “temporary” rate limit on reading tweets has caused a significant increase in Mastodon's popularity and user base.

This is a war of attrition. When Facebook and Twitter get started people made accounts, didn't know what to do, and put it aside for a while. Slowly but surely people learned how they wanted to use the sites.

Same thing here. Wars of attrition take time.

I understand what the message was and I disagree with the message.

Money is not fake the same way astronomy is fake.

Money is fake the same way trees are fake. (And yes, I said that correctly. Trees aren't things as much as they are generalized concepts.)

Instead of focusing on virtual reality maybe we should work on making actual reality suck less?

1dalm,
@1dalm@deacon.social avatar

@Talia_christine

I preach this every day.

The only way to make actually reality suck less is for people to be a part of their community IRL and to stop believing that virtual communities are equal substitutes.

The biggest problem I have with the press on long covid is that long Covid is really not very well defined. Long covid seems to be defined as any COVID infection where any symptom symptom last longer than 2 weeks. That mean if you have a lingering cough for a few weeks after you have COVID then you had ”long covid" even though that doesn't negatively impact your day-to-day life. Certainly there are some instances of long covid that are very traumatic but those seem to be very very rare

1dalm,
@1dalm@deacon.social avatar

@markusl I would like to see a better statistical explanation of what the risks of severe long covid are. That seems to be hard to come by.

Westsplaining (apparently already a word) seems to be quite in vogue with the Turkish elections and whatnot. Apparently also leads to instant blocks.

(Don’t presume to explain to me how things are not as bad in Turkey as I might think they are from your comfortable perch in some Western country – wait for it, this shit is heading your way too before too long, by the way – when I can’t even visit the place where I still have family because of the “democratically elected” 20-year autocrat.)

What does the anti-trans movement look like in practice?

Two girls in Misssissippi missed their high school graduations due to a rigidly enforced dress code. One, a trans girl, was told two weeks ahead of time she needed to wear pants.

The second, a gender-nonconforming girl, was pulled out of line and told to take her pants off and walk in her underwear.

https://www.assignedmedia.org/breaking-news/trans-girl-singled-out-for-humiliation-ahead-of-hs-graduation

1dalm,
@1dalm@deacon.social avatar

@e_urq The first one is demeaning and demoralizing. The second is sexual harassment and is probably legally actionable. This isn't just discrimination, it's assault. No one should ever be stripped of their cloths.

How is it possible that there is not a real viable open source alternative to Adobe Pro yet?

1dalm,
@1dalm@deacon.social avatar

@alex Or, heck, even a closed source alternative.

I would PAY for a viable feature matching alternative (one time, not monthly for gawd sakes).

Really, I would pay a one time fee for a software that just allows me to split up and merge PDF documents in a easy to use and light weight GUI. (PDFSAM used to do that, but they've moved to a monthly payment subscription plan.)

Always worth remembering. The could have been proprietary infrastructure.
https://www.npr.org/2023/04/30/1172276538/world-wide-web-internet-anniversary

"30 years ago this week…something called the World Wide Web launched into the public domain… owned Berners-Lee's invention and…had the option to license [it] out…for profit. But Berners-Lee believed that keeping the web as open as possible would help it grow…[He] eventually convinced CERN to release the World Wide Web into the without any or fees."

1dalm,
@1dalm@deacon.social avatar

@petersuber If Cern had licensed the internet, then AT&T would have developed their own separate internet, followed by every other phone company.

We would today likely have 3 or 4 competing and non-interoperable "internets", each with their own various features and services.

I'm not terribly sure that would be worse than what we have now.
