Q: Which is the best gaming Linux distro in the world?
A: The one that works for you. :)
Of course we're very excited about Bazzite and the unique ways it can address problems as a custom image of Fedora Atomic. However, we share lots of packages with other distros like Nobara and ChimeraOS.
this is nowhere near a stable release and most people should look into Sodalite if they want a good Pantheon-on-Fedora-Atomic experience, but
Zeliblue Pantheon is coming together decently, though it's jank af right now because I had to build it off of silverblue-main instead of base-main for reasons, but it...mostly works
one big exception is AppCenter because of PackageKit i think, but Flatpak-only AppCenter is coming in elementary OS 8, so that'll be nice
just tested out the new #uBlue ISO generator stuff with Zeliblue
installation was much quicker than with the old ISOs, and on GNOME we actually get GNOME's Initial Setup for user creation now (haven't tested a KDE Plasma image yet)
so in other words: it feels much like installing vanilla Fedora Silverblue now. but with custom uBlue images instead
As part of the Fedora COSMIC effort that is going on, the lead maintainer of that has spun up a pre-alpha, for-testing-only Fedora COSMIC image that we're hosting. If this excites you, consider contributing to make it an official spin!
The world of Fedora Atomic grows with BlueBuild, a spin-off of @UniversalBlue that is a newly independent project!
If you've been wanting to build or maintain your own custom image of Fedora Atomic Desktops, this may be another way to explore that interest. Instead of editing a containerfile, you work on a recipe that is then transformed into a containerfile to make the process of getting started easier.
Been curious about what it's like to use Bluefin? Here's a quick tour of it, walking through some of the main changes we make to Silverblue! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_yyyUMecwo
For more stability, the Bluefin custom image defaults to GTS (grand touring support), meaning that we hang back one release of Fedora. It brings stability in general, but specifically to all the GNOME extensions we use.
On the #ublue list of images, does “latest” map to “rawhide”, or does it simply mean “track the most recent numbered release” (saving you a manual rebase every 6 months) ?
brew has been re-promoted to the default CLI experience in Zeliblue (I am still gonna keep the zeliblue-cli image available and maintained as an alternative, though)
fish is now configured to check for the presence of several of the packages included in brew-utilities and init atuin, starship, and/or zoxide, or set up aliases for e.g. eza and bat to take place of ls and cat
Between some tweaks to brew, the implementation of offline ISO installers, and moving to grand touring support by default, we're cruising toward the release of Fedora Linux 40 to come out of beta.
There is still one more exciting change that is being considered for down the line, but overall we're ready to go. 🏎️
Part of me is tempted to use #UBlue to make a custom #Fedora#Silverblue image to add in the Pop_OS Gnome extensions, make #vim the default editor, and #Thunderbird the default mail reader and call it "Blue Bacon Linux"
Containers are a big part of how uBlue and atomic systems work. Let your OS install be a stable host and use containers to cleanly tinker or manage applications no matter what distro it's packaged for.
Bazzite started as a SteamOS alternative to the Steam Deck. Cool. Expanding Bazzite to other handhelds? Makes sense. Making it available for general PC usage? Also good.
How about making a Bazzite VM and then streaming that content to a Logitech G Cloud?
So I recently ran across this post and thread by @vwbusguy, and I would like to try to address some of the questions/misconceptions/etc that come up in the thread.
If you have questions, please, ask. What we do with #Kalpa isn't identical to what #Fedora does with their #AtomicDesktops, but many of the concepts for the end user are going to be similar/the same.
@vwbusguy I've been working on some ideas, with the #ublue guys already, and you'll probably see some of that making it's way into #Kalpa in the coming months. I can't speak to #Aeon, as I don't make the decisions there.
As far as the ability to do the image based rebasing, I'm not even certain how that would look, based on top of our stack, since we don't use ostree. Not to say it can't happen, but it's also not in our roadmap.
