Last weekend I rebased both of my computers from Fedora Silverblue to Universal Blue's Bluefin.

Works great so far and the rebase worked pretty seemlessly with all of my existing programming and music docker/distrobox stuff.

Anyway, I'm getting deeper into the immutable Linux rabbit hole. 🤓

Awesome news! Bluefin and Bazzite are now community supported Linux offerings for @frameworkcomputer laptops!

Congrats to @UniversalBlue for the achievement. 👏👏👏 We're glad to see that our work with Framework and in Fedora Atomic Desktops is enabling other communities to thrive!

Homebrew is now installed for you with the latest images of Bluefin, Aurora, and Bazzite. We don't have to strongly recommend installing it anymore because it's right there!

Homebrew is a great package manager especially for CLI apps. Give it a whirl if you haven't already.

I am getting a new computer for an elderly and to be able to support it, I'm removing the Windows and want to install a distro. They have previously used Ubuntu Budgie for about 4 years. Which one of these distros do you suggest for lower maintenance burden in the long run?

🔂 Please boost for getting more opinions.

@rex@mastodontech.de avatar

@Mehrad What about Fedora Silverblue or Kinoite? You could even get one of the images which, if I'm not mistaken, are designed to be "hands-off".

The Forge is currently being developed and we're looking for contributions, so please take a look and help if you can!

What do you think is the best thing to happen to in the last few years?

TeamLinux01,
@TeamLinux01@mastodon.social avatar

@gamingonlinux For servers, going with https://opencontainers.org/ OCI. Podman is great.

For Desktop, going with Proton. Although recently, atomic desktops is getting up there (go go container ideas).

Is there any good Blog post to learn #uBlue customization with relatively limited knowledge about #Docker? I don't like the idea of a distro that I can't customize easily so normal #Silverblue doesn't sound like my favorite choice but uBlue, #VanillaOS and similar approaches sound very tempting and I love the concept of #Atomic distros in general! Also, do you think it's easy enough to learn to imediately switch my main computer over or should I do some more testing in VMs first?

The Fedora Project is taking rpm-ostree and atomic systems to the next level with our bootc community initiative!

The goal is to evolve Fedora Atomic Desktops, Fedora CoreOS, and Fedora IoT to incorporate bootable containers. You will get the benefit of an atomic OS on your computer while unlocking a world of customization through the cloud native development model.

Yesterday at Red Hat Summit @jorge and @cgwalters presented to a full house of Red Hat employees to walk through the state of atomic / image-based Linux and where we can go from here.

Fedora and Red Hat are looking at what we're doing with bootable containers and are interested in carrying that forward!

Time to formally welcome @bluebuild to the Fediverse!

This is the project that makes it easier for you to make your own custom images of Fedora Atomic Desktops.

If you've wondered how to use an atomic system while still being able to customize and tinker, this is another good place to learn more!

I just rebased to bluefin-dx:40 following the discussion here: https://universal-blue.discourse.group/t/bluefin-f40-beta-builds-now-available/967/3

I pinned my current config with this :
sudo ostree admin pin 0

and ran the rebase command:
rpm-ostree rebase ostree-image-signed:docker://ghcr.io/ublue-os/bluefin-dx:40

After downloading 2GB+ of data, it committed the change and it asked for a reboot it. The laptop rebooted and I was greeted with the login page.

Tooted about a issue yesterday, in which I couldn't install it at all. I now have, ahem, "screenshots" so hopefully someone smarter than I can point me in the right direction.

I am booting from a 16GB SanDisk Cruzer Blade.

On UEFI, I get a message to say the image is invalid / unsupported.
On BIOS, the installer starts (after a successful self-test) but immediately crashes with a big, scary Python error.

Note: happens with both and images.

Send help, !
