Ok so this absolutely insane thing happened. I launched Gamescope on my AMD iGPU and set Steam to use the Nvidia dGPU. The result is HDR on NVK!

Since the backend post (https://www.moonbitlang.com/blog/js-support) is trending, I thought I'd compare backend optimizer (https://github.com/aristanetworks/purescript-backend-optimizer) output to see how it fares. The results were pretty good!

With basically this PureScript code -

run = fromArray
 >>> flatMapF (fromArray <<< _.members)
 >>> filterF _.gender
 >>> mapF (\x -> min 100 (x.score + 5))
 >>> mapF grade
 >>> filterF (_ == 'A')
 >>> foldF (\_ x -> x+1) 0

the benchmark results are as follows. PureScript is roughly 6x faster than plain JS, and 6x slower than Moonbit output ( -

┌─────────┬──────────────┬─────────────┬────────────────────┬──────────┬─────────┐
│ (index) │ Task Name │ ops/sec │ Average Time (ns) │ Margin │ Samples │
├─────────┼──────────────┼─────────────┼────────────────────┼──────────┼─────────┤
│ 0 │ 'Moonbit' │ '34,67,542' │ 288.38869989829305 │ '±0.06%' │ 1733772 │
│ 1 │ 'Plain Js' │ '74,816' │ 13365.983827421464 │ '±0.54%' │ 37409 │
│ 2 │ 'Kotlin Js' │ '1,90,241' │ 5256.474017304151 │ '±0.38%' │ 95121 │

I'm a web perf nerd, so I install every browser I can find and run all the benchmarks on https://browserbench.org on a regular basis.

I notice that (on Windows 11) Firefox is much better at Speedometer 3.0 than it was on 2.0.

It's scoring as well as Chrome most of the time, and outperforms Opera and Edge handily.

It still sucks at Jetpack 2.1 and MotionMark 1.3 though.

@Vivaldi is coming out on top right now!

Sound devices including their drivers and settings can heavily influence GPU benchmarks. I learned that when it was my day job to run such tests. This regression report reminded me of it: https://lore.kernel.org/all/CABXGCsNmEtrN9DK-XmESaPm_1xpXm8A%2BjuE%2B44Jf6AK5JE0%2BTQ@mail.gmail.com/

"I spotted that FPS was around 122 in the Shadow of the Tomb Raider benchmark at commit f6cef5f8c37f but after moving to commit 4ae3dc83b047 ("ALSA: timer: Fix missing irq-disable at closing") it decreased to 84".

First MacBook Air benchmarks:

  • M3 16GB Air gets single-core score of 3,157, multi-core score of 12,020

  • Compare to M2 16GB — single-core score of 2,610 and a multi-core score of 10,120

That's about "20% more in single-core and 18% more in multi-core"

Good to see.

Fast and Simple Benchmarking in Rust.

It’s indeed pretty simple. Reports can be improved (HTML or PDF is missing, but CLI is excellent); the basis looks solid. No support for async yet, but it should not be a big deal to add it. No doubt contributions will pop soon. Keeping an eye on this project.

If you're into and , the options for some decent micro and macro benchmarking aren't obvious at all. So I did some research, and wrote about it!

I actually really like seeing Intel getting competitive in this area, as it increases competition nicely!
