@ErisCaffee @arstechnica considers their customers an “investment” because the hardware is a loss leader for their supplies and services.

They could sell solid hardware at an appropriate price, but a stable source of enables a more attractively consistent return on shareholder investment and makes budgeting and planning easier.

Different hardware + supplies/services companies strike different balances. HP’s is just really tilted.
