Oddly, the #OnlineSafetyAct has suggested my next project.

Right now I'm all in on #vdash but that will mature before long so today I wondered what next.

I wondered, how can we stop small businesses and self hosters shutting down services like #Mastodon, unable to meet unrealistic moderation requirements of UK law.

I think we can do this with #SafeNetwork or another #p2p platform.

My ideas are very raw and won't fit in a few toots, so not for now.

I prefer to work alone but may need help. 🤷‍♂️

As warned, the UK #OnlineSafetyAct is forcing communities to shut down services such as Mastodon for UK users.

The draconian bill was deliberately targeted at individuals, communities and small businesses, none of which can afford moderation costs or legal risks.

How long before the UK has nothing but corporate services that exploit rather than serve users?

This terrible act hits anything self or community hosted: social media, blogs, git services like #Codeberg and of course #Mastodon.

Super-complaints will play an essential role within the new regulatory framework established by the #OnlineSafetyAct as they will allow for complaints about systemic issues to be raised with the regulator. - https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/super-complaints-eligible-entity-criteria-and-procedural-requirements what could possibly go wrong? #OSA

As the becomes law in the without critical legal safeguards to end-to-end encryption, the internet as we know it faces a very real threat: https://proton.me/blog/online-safety-act

The Act could give the UK government the power to access, collect, and read anyone’s private conversations at any time. The UK Government has previously admitted that the proposals are "technically unfeasible," and we hope @Ofcom
keeps this front of mind during the implementation process. (1/3)

clueless_capybara,

As someone who practically grew up on the internet and only started to truly make an effort on maintaining my #onlineprivacy recently the #OnlineSafetyAct is really starting to bother me, and im happy that @protonmail is making an effort go fight it.

It's been over two weeks since the Hamas attacks and the start of the Israeli offensive in Gaza.

We condemn the targeting of civilians by all parties, both through indiscriminate terror attacks on Israelis, and what the UN has called the collective punishment of Palestinians.

As a UK digital rights organisation, we also condemn how these events are being used to infringe civil liberties of people in the UK.

We’ve seen how easy it is for errors in algorithms to erroneously label people as terrorists, which exacerbates racism and discrimination.

This forewarns the problems with false-positives that will arise under laws like the Online Safety Act.

The #OnlineSafetyAct can be used to order companies to remove illegal content before it's been posted, including content related to terrorism – the scope of which can be easily extended.

The UK Home Secretary's letter to the police saying that waving a Palestinian flag could be a public order offence also applies to online content.

Posts containing a Palestinian flag or slogans could be used to identify ‘illegal content’ and suppress debate on social platforms under the #OnlineSafetyAct.

Enabling back doors (because there would be more than one) in cryptographic systems is not the thin end of the wedge it is the destruction of that method of Cryptography.

It is the destruction of trust relationships.

All because of ignorance.

The #OnlineSafetyAct is now UK law 😱

This grab bag of half-baked fantasy solutions to misunderstood (or misrepresented) problems has received Royal Assent, including powers to break #encryption in messaging apps and censor content before it's even posted.

Scrutiny over how Ofcom implements the law and how the government exercises its powers is critical now that the threats to #privacy and #freedomofexpression have become law.
