Saving the Monarchs by Jaime Rojo

A latecomer attempts to squeeze in between other monarch butterflies for warmth, at El Rosario Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary, a migratory overwintering spot within the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve in Michoacán, Mexico. Most of the eastern population of monarch butterflies overwinter in the reserve.

My wife has been pretty active in filling our yard with native plants and pollinators and she was able to catch this amazing video of a monarch in the garden. Hope this brings a smile to someone this weekend! 😀

A neighbor down the alley has the monarch and pollinator oasis in his backyard. So many mating pairs and butterflies of all kinds flitting around! I am always so pleased with my own native pollinator patches in my yard, but his was another level.
Over the weekend I got his permission to pop into his yard and take some photos so now that I've got some days off, I'm looking forward to being a little shutterbug there for the next couple days.

A shallow focus image of two monarchs on a tree twig, mating. The male butterfly is in focus, with his wings flat to the twig while the female's wings are fully closed and in narrow profile to the camera.

I had nine come out today!
Running total:
Female - 11
Male - 3
Chrysalis - 12

Fun fact: a group of butterflies is called a Kaleidescope!
