When you realise that you watched your first #KDrama 20 years ago.
TWENTY FREAKING YEARS AGO.
Oh btw, if you've not seen this you gotta. (You can watch the episodes on Youtube.)
Fine, it's like the most makjang thing ever, but this was what made #KDramas delicious k? If you want to know what "classic" halyu-wave Kdrama is like, this is a good intro.
@liztai For Kdrama i have two more years to go, i think (full house was my first) but it's actually 20 years for Jdramas.
And now i feel very old and i will go cry 😂
I realised something recently - why I avoid shows such The Glory and palace harem dramas.
Bullying. There's so much bullying in them.
And because I suffered from a lot of bullying in different periods of my life, I do not like being reminded of it nor do I enjoy watching people suffer from it. It's stressful!
Revenge dramas however, are a favourite. I wonder why. Bwhaha.
I also visited South Korea many times. Once, I had to cover (as a reporter) an event where a #KDrama actor was an ambassador for a brand and I am annoyed I can't remember who it was till this day cos I wasn't into #KDramas then. The last time I visited #Seoul was around 2019*, when I had to report on the commemoration of Korean Catholic saints.
I miss being a journalist 😭
Not sure about the date lol. But roughly after I left the media for good, probably around 2018 to 2019 or so.
@cinderdazzle612 Hah, I need to find the article. I know I have squirelled it somewhere ... but I just checked my diaries, and it was 2019, I was correct ;)
The lovely thing about #DeathsGame is that you get to see many great actors in one drama at the same time, including Kim Jae Wook as one of the best characters in this show.
Jokes aside, #DeathsGame is incredibly well-written and structured. It's been a long time since a #Kdrama has kept me surprised.
It's an interesting blend of fantasy, supernatural horror, murder/mystery and romance. Usually a drama would self-combust if it tries to juggle so many genres at the same time, but the writer manages it all like an expert.
It is also surprisingly deep and moving. Highly recommended.
MyDramaList is a really useful app - helps me organize my drama watchlist & helps me be more strategic with the way I watch dramas. I have a "plan to watch list" and pick just one or two from the list to watch at a time. It has proven to be super effective - I'm able to focus and absorb a drama better rather than jump from drama to drama.
Here are the #CDramas#Kdramas I plan to catch up with this year:
@liztai That sounds a little immature on both sides. It's odd how some dramas evoke such tribalism. I like the dramas but don't understand why it is a problem that others don't.
@Sollenbum it's a weird sociological phenomenon. To me it doesn't make sense why you should care so much about what a stranger thinks about your fav show
I have actors in a personal blacklist whose dramas I will never watch because they are so bad at acting. I don't like Till the End of the Moon, couldn't tolerate Love Between Fairy and Devil and thought Hidden Love was boring. The Untamed's popularity is perplexing to me.
But why get upset over this? The world is vast & our tastes are diverse. Me not liking your fav show does not discredit or devalue your love for it.
Fandom parasocial behavior is weird. #Cdramas#KDramas#KDrama#CDrama
I love #KDrama#CDrama folks in the Fediverse.
In other fan places people insist you must not "spread negativity" by saying negative things about a show or actor. I have even been warned not to post "things like this" or "you get what you deserve".
If I don't like a show I will very well say it. And if I think an actor's performance needs work, I will state it without prejudice.
I rarely do this, but I find fandom gatekeeping annoying & am so glad it doesn't happen here. #KDramas#Cdramas
@liztai Conversations get dull when everyone is always in agreement. As long as everyone is just chatting, who cares if they have a different opinion? Some people love Vegemite and some hate it—it doesn’t mean that either of them are wrong or that one group hates the other!
I dislike fandom purity so much. We can dislike things without being a shit-stirrer!
@bougiewonderland yea I am with ya, which is why I find the toxicity in cdrama fandom stress inducing! Cdrama and Kdrama folks at Mastodon are very lovely 😍
@liztai But, there's a but : the last well known series on Netflix (Gyeonseong Creature) and on Prime (Death's Game) where "short" but above all, divided in two parts. That's a bit of a concern from my POV, because they can't reach all the audience they deserve.
My 2 cents. /2
#PerfectMarriageRevenge was perfectly aware that it is a soapy makjang and played with all the genre's tropes with its heart's content. Yet it manages to subvert expectations at times.
While I felt the ending was overly long, since the story is actually about our heroine's journey to confidence and happiness, and they've been through hell, they can take their time 😄
Finally, after a year of disappointing #KDramas, I found one I can happily say was a lovely watch.
Liking Perfect Marriage Revenge a lot. After a slew of #KDramas that just didn't hit it off with me it's good to start enjoying something again 😁
It's a transmigration, second chance at life story where a woman decides to change her life after dying tragically in her first life.
@whoosh It had everything - birth secrets, the murderous jealous love rival, hidden identities lol.
I have to say some parts of it gave me so much stress I had to skip it haha. Hope to finish it today.
A hilariously accurate representation of my taste. Mostly 😆 However, this graph is not 100% accurate as I went on a documenting spree in May last year when I joined Mydramalist and had been watching #KDramas for some time. In 2023, I watched mostly #CDramas and they were definitely not romance dramas.
I prefer #KDrama romances over #CDrama ones, so I tend to skew there. Also while I tend to pick a show for its fantasy angle rather the romance, but these shows are often are romance focused too.
I have seen actors in #kdramas get pigeonholed before but here’s Ok Ja-yeon basically getting typecast into the same character arc twice (in QUEENMAKER and UNDER THE QUEEN’S UMBRELLA).
Please let her do other things, she has talent. #kdramas
If you like the political intrigue parts of sageuks you will probably enjoy QUEENMAKER. If you don’t you will probably not care for it.
It gets a little stupid 3/4 through but then gets good again when the protagonist remembers that she’s a fixer and her job is to be kind of a terrible person even if she's not working for horrible people any more.
