Do people (#SysOps & #NetOps)) still care about the country assignment of their #IPv4 & #IPv6 networks used on their servers? Or don’t you mind about it anymore…?
Example: Coming from .de and using a French IP is ok for you?
Like with all the commodities with increasingly scarce supply and high demand, the time has come for #IPv4 addresses to also become a speculative asset.
Not the kind of thing that you'd buy to run your little server, but the kind of thing to hoard on and use as the aluminum foil to wrap and back your corporate bonds.
Just when you think that the enshittification of our industry can't get any worse, here you go with news of somebody creating money out of thin air backed by IP addresses.
Zastanawiałem się ostatnio, dlaczego po 28 latach od wprowadzenia protokołu #IPv6, nadal tak mało dostawców internetu go oferuje.
No i dzisiaj dostałem olśnienia. Zgodnie z zasadą "Jak działa to nie ruszaj" - dopóki #internet się nie sypie, nikogo nie obchodzi i nie będzie obchodziło jakieś IPv6.
Tak sobie potem pomyślałem, że przecież #IANA (organizacja zajmująca się zarządzeniem adresami IP) mogłaby ogłosić protokoł #IPv4 jako przestarzały. No... ale tego nie zrobią. Dlaczego? Ponieważ trzaskają gigantyczną kasę na dzierżawie bloków IPv4.
Miliony sieciowców w firmach musiałoby się nauczyć IPv6, żeby poprawnie skonfigurować sieć, co generuje dodatkowe koszta. Pomijając już, że wiele z nich to samouki w Januszexach, którzy coś tam potrafią pogrzebać, żeby ostatecznie działało, ale to tyle.
Aktualnie mamy sytuację patową:
brakuje adresów publicznym; ISP przydzielają jeden adres wielu urządzeniom w różnych domach
Just a brief reminder that every #AWS VM/container/etc you give a public #IPv4#IP address to now costs you $3.65/month more than in 2023. AWS charges per IP-address per-hour.
Just signed my parents up for gigabit #fibre (both upload and download) in Bradford via #Brsk. They support full #IPv6, static #IPv4, and your own router via #DHCP and DHCPv6 PD/SLAAC. The checkout via Stripe was also wonderfully straight forward. Impressed so far.
I would like to reply to these "We have IPv4 addresses" spam mails (received via the address in RIPE NCC) with "Lol, Who uses IPv4 anymore? I'm all IPv6"
⚠️February brings changes as #AWS now charges USD 0.005 per hour for public #IPv4 addresses!
The new charge has been implemented across all AWS regions and services, including EC2 instances, RDS databases, EKS nodes, and other service-managed public IPv4 addresses.
CZ.NIC set an end to #IPv4 on June 06, 2032 in the Czech Republic. This leaves operators about 300 days to go #IPv6. As a German, I hope that this puts pressure on all European ISPs.

Big news! Yesterday, the Czech government approved a resolution that on June 6, 2032 (20 years after so called IPv6 launch day), it will end the provision of government services over IPv4. 👏 Who is gonna join us?
