In the glory days of web 1.0, social websites would prominently link out to their digital neighbors via lists known as webrings; magical doorways to an expansive hinterland of digital villages.
Let's envision what a truly federated chat like #Matrix could do to improve the cross-connectivity of chat channels. Most of these features are already possible, they just haven't been implemented yet in a community-oriented client experience.
@erlend I've spent 2 hours of this rainy day to read your blog and #CommuneApp design discussions. I will definitely keep an eye on it and hope you'll deliver something in 2024.
Commune has been in sporadic development for three years. A lot has happened in this time, so for old-timers and newcomers alike, here's a comprehensive summary of our past, present and future as we head into 2024 with renewed focus and conviction.
We're also soft-announcing our newest initiative on the path to production readiness: Our backend is being rewritten in #rust 🦀
Hey #opensource people, got anything fun that you could have some extra help with?
I'm kinda coding solo a lot of the time and I wanna learn how to function more in a cooperative environment, but I dunno where to start and the larger projects are a bit intimidating.
@mizah Playa is being made for learning purposes. But it’s built with the same stack as #CommuneApp (once the Rust rewrite of our server backend is released) which intends to compete with Discord by building on top of Matrix.
PLEASE TELL YOUR FRIENDS. I am looking for a React-capable, full-stack developer who would like to lead a new fork of #Element.io. The existing forks are simply not very aggressive, and there is a massive void for a project that is. I am confident that a few new features and some better documentation will make it very popular, very fast. #developers#FOSS#matrix
Practically all of these will make it on to the #CommuneApp roadmap at some point. We basically take the approach that our client experience isn’t competitive until it’s as user-friendly as Discord; that’s where the bar is set.
As such we have one key departure from Element in that with Commune encryption is opt-in rather than required from the start.
It’s also web-public (like a forum) by default to enable lurking, aka ‘anonymous vibe checks’.
I’ve officially bought my ticket and booked my trip for the #Matrix Community Summit at @cbase, 21.-24. September.
Excitedly looking forward to meeting lots of @matrix folks in person to talk about community building & strategy, coops, interoperability and #CommuneApp 💫
So, #CommuneApp is looking into fedbox as a possible way to enable #ActivityPub support in Commune’s link-aggregator feeds. The first test case would be for shpong.com, our Reddit-like.
> Marius:from my experience though creating a link aggregator with vote based sorting is not that compatible with the way ActivityPub collections work.
I’d love to learn more about that. #Lemmy and #kbin seem to be figuring it out alright enough, no?
