https://blog.commune.sh/federated-webrings/

In the glory days of web 1.0, social websites would prominently link out to their digital neighbors via lists known as webrings; magical doorways to an expansive hinterland of digital villages.

Let's envision what a truly federated chat like could do to improve the cross-connectivity of chat channels. Most of these features are already possible, they just haven't been implemented yet in a community-oriented client experience.

@erlend I've spent 2 hours of this rainy day to read your blog and #CommuneApp design discussions. I will definitely keep an eye on it and hope you'll deliver something in 2024.

What do you think about https://webxdc.org?

erlend,
@erlend@writing.exchange avatar

@lutindiscret @delta ah it’s like a sibling project of Delta, cool!

Will definitely look more closely into this when #CommuneApp is further along 👌

Like any other major network incumbent, Discord cannot simply be side-stepped altogether; appropriate off-ramps are required.

#Matrix bridging enables an incremental, non-disruptive transition from the old to the new.

We invite anyone interested in the development of #CommuneApp to join our newly opened space: https://matrix.to/#/#home:commune.sh

The first half of our product rollout starts next month, as we begin publicly testing our uniquely community-oriented Matrix client.

Commune has been in sporadic development for three years. A lot has happened in this time, so for old-timers and newcomers alike, here's a comprehensive summary of our past, present and future as we head into 2024 with renewed focus and conviction.

We're also soft-announcing our newest initiative on the path to production readiness: Our backend is being rewritten in 🦀

Two or more people together in a group chat room; that's a minimum-viable community.

A few drivers together in a group chat; that's a minimum-viable ride-sharing platform.

One person together with an LLM in a chat interface; that's a minimum-viable AI assistant.

Lots of ventures started as nothing more than a group chat. It’s how you throw kindling on the initial spark of an idea: a test of resonance ❤️‍🔥

Hey people, got anything fun that you could have some extra help with?

I'm kinda coding solo a lot of the time and I wanna learn how to function more in a cooperative environment, but I dunno where to start and the larger projects are a bit intimidating.

erlend,
@erlend@writing.exchange avatar

@mizah Playa is being made for learning purposes. But it’s built with the same stack as #CommuneApp (once the Rust rewrite of our server backend is released) which intends to compete with Discord by building on top of Matrix.

Does anyone want to help me implement AI-powered data enrichment for learning resources for https://learnawesome.org/ ?

Here is one possible approach: https://github.com/learn-awesome/learndb/issues/66

@nilesh are you familiar with Noosphere-protocol / Subconscious-app? by @gordon

It seems ideologically aligned with your learndb.

Meanwhile we’re working on the discursive layer of ‘The Learning App’ in #CommuneApp (which is also Svelte btw).

Wow. Thanks for a constructive (not defensive) reply. I guess I need to look at #communeApp, stat, eh?

PLEASE TELL YOUR FRIENDS. I am looking for a React-capable, full-stack developer who would like to lead a new fork of #Element.io. The existing forks are simply not very aggressive, and there is a massive void for a project that is. I am confident that a few new features and some better documentation will make it very popular, very fast. #developers #FOSS #matrix

erlend,
@erlend@writing.exchange avatar

@shoq this is awesome, thanks a lot!

Practically all of these will make it on to the #CommuneApp roadmap at some point. We basically take the approach that our client experience isn’t competitive until it’s as user-friendly as Discord; that’s where the bar is set.

As such we have one key departure from Element in that with Commune encryption is opt-in rather than required from the start.

It’s also web-public (like a forum) by default to enable lurking, aka ‘anonymous vibe checks’.

https://blog.erlend.sh/cozy-community-software

As #CommuneApp edges closer to an early-access release, I've been musing on the concept of the cozy web vibes that we intend to cultivate in our tech.

Cozy community software is..

  • Safe – moderated; incremental
  • Accessible – discoverable; user-friendly
  • Casual – default asynchronous; at-your-leisure
  • Present – optionally synchronous; in-the-moment
  • Intimate – selectively private/public; closeness by consent
  • what did I miss?

I’ve officially bought my ticket and booked my trip for the #Matrix Community Summit at @cbase, 21.-24. September.

Excitedly looking forward to meeting lots of @matrix folks in person to talk about community building & strategy, coops, interoperability and #CommuneApp 💫

See y’all in three short weeks!

Are you on any chat like Matrix or Discord?

erlend,
@erlend@writing.exchange avatar

@mariusor 🤝

So, #CommuneApp is looking into fedbox as a possible way to enable #ActivityPub support in Commune’s link-aggregator feeds. The first test case would be for shpong.com, our Reddit-like.

> Marius:from my experience though creating a link aggregator with vote based sorting is not that compatible with the way ActivityPub collections work.

I’d love to learn more about that. #Lemmy and #kbin seem to be figuring it out alright enough, no?

Communal Bonfires; creating space for group-scale discourse on top of @matrix

https://blog.erlend.sh/communal-bonfires

Today we're pre-releasing Commune, our first foundational step towards a community platform built specifically for alignment with digital gardens.

Cyber-ecological messaging anyone?!

It's an evolving piece of software serving as the primary bonfire component of the overarching Community OS concept.
