Well I got the day off work today and decided it was a good time to switch operating system distros from #ChimeraOS to #EndevourOS
I decided to go with the ultra minimal setup with no built in desktop environment so I'll be building one up from scratch. Gonna start by experimenting with Niri and seeing how far I can get with it
Going with #HoloISO doesn't seem like it would make much sense to me. As far as I understand it is something like an unauthorized derivative of #SteamOS so you'd be putting yourself at Valve's whims without Valve okaying it and no voice at all in the development process.
I like getting the dev team of an open distro involved, I guess #ChimeraOS might have been better if they fit that description as well though.
I'm considering getting myself a new computer to replace my #SteamDeck.
It seems the GPD Win 4 finally has decent #linux support via #ChimeraOS and I saw someone on Reddit got the GSM module working so I could potentially replace my phone with it. The smaller form factor wouls be great for when I'm walking around witg my head mounted display.
And now #chimeraos is running flawlessly, with proper screen rotation tweaks just automatically applied at time of install, on the GPD Win Mini........could probably use a newer kernel though, as it looks like ChimeraOS is on 6.5.6.
The open source community is kinda funny like that sometimes. Sometimes someone will submit a patch quietly and then things in various SteamOS-like distros will just work. Now it looks like adding a shortcut to the Lutris Battle.net launcher install is working in ChimeraOS just out of the blue: https://github.com/ChimeraOS/chimeraos/issues/536 #steamos#chimeraos#linuxgaming
I've said it before about the slew of powerful and expensive handheld gaming devices that have come on the market since the #SteamDeck, but I'll say it again....people who buy handheld devices don't really want an expensive and powerful device that compromises portability. They want a light, ergonomic, affordable device that gives satisfactory performance for the games they play. #Nintendo have known this for decades which is why they've had the market cornered. Other companies don't seem to get it
@paulthenerd Agreed, while I don't personally support or agree with Nintendo's litigious practices. I'm hoping here that AYANEO is actually working with Valve on getting SteamOS on this, and not just throwing crappy HoloISO on it without any support and calling it a "SteamOS Edition". Otherwise, I guess I'll recommend to friends to install #chimeraOS on here haha
So #ChimeraOS apparently ships with mdadm pre-installed. I have three small SATA SSDs in the #gaming PC, one to boot from and two to store games. So, I was able to create a software RAID 0 array to combine those two drives, add that to #Steam as a storage location so now I have a small dedicated boot drive, 1TBish of fast SSD storage that runs at double the speed of a SATA interface (ranging from about 950MB/s to 1,050MB/s, and 4TB of mass storage for stuff that doesn't need the SSD.
Orange Pi Neo is new handheld powered by AMD and comes preinstalled with Manjaro (neo.manjaro.org)
