Former CEO of Twitter wanted to build a social protocol no-one can control, like SMTP or HTTP for social media. Bluesky’s ATProto was supposed to be an open source protocol that Twitter could eventually utilize, but then Musk happened and Bluesky started taking it to the wrong direction and everything fell apart in Dorsey’s mind.
A very revealing interview. I now see even more future in W3C’s ActivityPub.
This noob is testing the interconnectivity of the #Fediverse:
The word out there on the Fediverse make it seem as if all the different tools (Mastdn/P-tube/Lemmy/etc.) can interact with one another. But this is not the case, as some work both ways, whilst others only one way, or at all.
a) Using #Bridgyfed, to test between AT ( #BlueSky ) & AP protocols (Mastodon, etc.)
b) Meta's #Threads for testing with Mastodon.
c) Starting to test #Nostr with its peer-to-peer network.
TL;DR:
The #Fediverse holds a lot of promise, but it the ideal level of interconnectivity isn't there yet. (And yes, not all of them need to be able to connect and interact on the same level of details as with the others, as they are different tools.)
The whole idea of BlueSky supporting nomadic identities but the rest of the ActivityPub (plus other stuff) Fediverse being unable to do so is such an oversold idea.
A new service using ActivityPub behind the scenes (and not the AT Protocol) can absolutely support nomadic identities, even if the service doesn't treat a whole website as the actor.
It will still use did:plc, same as AT Protocol (BlueSky), but once done so, an application that understands how to work with did:plc can dereference an actor based on the DID.
That said, an existing service will simply not be compatible with this idea, without changing how it operates.
I don’t really understand what it means that #bluesky is somehow now connected to the #Fediverse? If I have an account there on bluesky, will I now have two accounts in the Fediverse?
So, Jack Dorsey gave an interview about why he gave up on #Bluesky, and apparently it's mostly that they… started doing moderation? 🤨
Yes, they sometimes take down accounts that are breaking ToS, e.g. harassing others. No, I don't think it's a bad thing.
Now that more parts of the federation and user-controlled moderation tools are ready, you can post from your own PDS and you won't be censored unless you, like, post CSAM or sth… (and we do want to censor that, right?)
Jack Dorsey interview post-#Bluesky. Whatever you think of him, his views on why he helped getting Bluesky started in the first place are interesting. I wonder which of those might apply to the Fediverse (which he doesn't mention at all).
A lot more happening #Eurovision-wise on #Bluesky than here, upon a quick look. And I can't really gather the activity at #Threads since there's NO way I can display most recent activity, even if not sorted by time 🤦♂️ so idk where to keep posting on Saturday 😕
I think the next sea change of behavior will be when @Mastodon, #bluesky and @threads are bridged, and a Groups protocol matures. They will provide a kind of selectivity of topic, qualifications, and behavior. People are welcome to lurk, but what and how they engage will drive popularity.
The #BlueskyBridge by Snarfed was soft-launched this week - still very alpha and a lot of things don't work, but posts are starting to come through both ways 🙂
Right now you need to follow the bridge to get bridged (the DM-request mechanism isn't finished yet). I'm tracking the bridged accounts (M->B) here: https://blue.mackuba.eu/directory/fedi
Testing the Fediverse's interconnectivity between apps and protocols
One thing that would have been nice to know as a newbie on the Fediverse:...
