I’m absolutely delighted to have had my drawing “Airframe II” (the airship USS Akron under construction) selected for the prestigious Derwent Art Prize 2024. The show runs from the 4th - 14th April at The Oxo Gallery in London. #airship#art#drawing
Part of my Phantom airship collection. My #inspiration for this piece was the tragic end of the legendary Hindenburg luxury #airship. I wanted to create scenes we might have seen if she were still around today floating peacefully and safely through the skies. This is the view you would have if you were in a boat on the #ocean looking up as the giant #zeppelin passed overhead.
Spent the day in #Friedrichshafen learning things about #airships, they have been such a source of fascination for me, especially when thinking about a greener path for aviation.
It's hard to grasp how large they were and the comfort of travel that they allowed.
I also had no idea that Z(eppelin)F, the car transmission company, originated as building the transmission for the Zeppelins 😧
Or are the best days of #Airship technology still ahead of us?
The French Government, and Quebec, see them as an innovative way of extracting wood from otherwise unaccessible forests, or using them to install larger and more efficient wind turbines, which can be hard to install in some places due to their size. #FlyingWhales is due to start testing its new airships by the end of the year.
Two completed (although I’m never really sure when a drawing is finished) A4 size drawings in graphite and Karismacolour pencils of the airship USS Akron under construction #airship#drawing
More lost future: in 1926 the British War Office produced this "Map Showing Areas in which Main Imperial Airship Routes Will Probably Develop".
The cities shown are there for obvious reasons, with only Bedford in England being mysterious. The Royal Airship Works was there and its airship sheds still stand.
Events leading to the end of this future were already underway: the R101 was being worked on and after it crashed in 1930 airships were suddenly The Past.
Some 86 years after the Hindenburg disaster, LTA Research wants to bring back airships, this time with funding from Sergey Brin. The billionaire and co-founder of Google has quietly helped modernize a long-forgotten form of flight—one that could be used to transport cargo or assist during humanitarian relief missions.
Ashlee Vance got an exclusive look at their prototype.
This is some official art of the Grig Orig, the Empire's gigantic flagship. It's fought twice in Panzer Dragoon Saga. The second time, it was infested with pure-type creatures.
